“You also need to sing,” I added.

He stopped, suddenly annoyed. “What do you mean, sing?”

“I want a gentleman who can sing and dance.”

We stared at each other for a moment. He seemed too stunned to do anything at all. I breathed out in relief. Of course the captain of a pirate ship wouldn’t sing and dance on my command. I couldn’t be a siren. That was proof enou—

“I only know a few songs,” Adrian said. “But if that’s what gets you to come to me…”

He started to waltz again, his breathy voice forcing out a random sea shanty I didn’t know the words to. When he lost his balance while dancing, so did I.

Captain Adrian—the same captain who had kidnapped me, forced me to feed him, and demanded that I obey his every command—was now singing for me while stumbling around like a fool.

I gasped and put a hand over my mouth, stepping back.

It couldn’t be true. I shook my head to myself. No, it couldn’t be.

Knock, knock, knock.

Adrian stopped, a clarity coming back to his eyes. Were they glazed over before? I hadn’t even noticed.

He signaled me to wait as he answered the door, one of the crew members on the other side.

“What’s wrong?” Adrian asked.

“We need you to come to the first mate’s quarters right away,” the man said. “Something’s happened to Henrik.”

Adrian nearly flew out the door, and I ran to follow. Did something happen to Henrik because of what Luc had done?

Or what I had done?

I ran out the door, only to be greeted by shouts and drawn swords.

“What the hell is this?” I heard Adrian yell above the cries.

Coming toward them, I stopped just outside of a circle of men. Henrik was on his knees in the center of the circle, Adrian quickly being brought to his own. I felt my arms being twisted behind me, until a voice called out for them to stop.

“The girl is with us,” Luc’s voice said behind me. “Release her.”

The man behind me released and quickly apologized as Luc stepped forward into the circle. He clasped his hands behind his back, looking down at the captain and first mate, who were now on their knees in front of all their men.

Luc only smiled.

“To answer your question,” Luc said, “this, my dear captain, is called a mutiny.”

CHAPTER 25—BETRAYAL

“Tie them up, please,” Luc sang with a smile.

He turned toward me, the noonday sun catching the glimmer in his eye. At the sight of Henrik and Adrian being forced to their knees so ropes could bind their wrists, I rushed to meet him, grabbing his sleeve.

“Luc? Luc, what are you doing?” I asked.

He gently took my hand as his lips pursed together.

“I’m sorry, little dove,” he said with sincerity. “But this is necessary.”

“Mutiny? Necessary?”
