“How can you be so sure?”

“Because I was there—that’s how. You know what? You—”

“What?” he asks.

But I don’t answer. He distracted me, and I almost missed Ally leaving the cafeteria. I leave the table and follow her down the hallway and into the women’s restroom.

Good thing it’s empty.

I hear the toilet flush, and then the door opens. Ally gasps when she sees me standing in front of it.

“Hey, Ally. How’s it going?”

“What are you doing in here?”

I step into the stall and lock the door behind us.

“Are you trying to ghost me?”

“Maybe.”

“Seriously?”

“What? Guys do it all the time.”

“Well, it’s severely damaging to my ego, for one. Don’t you care about my ego, Ally?”

She bites back a smile, but I see it. “Not really. Now move.”

She reaches for the lock, and I grab her hand before she can, then shift to the left, blocking it.

“Why’d you fuck me then?”

“Devon…please.”

“That sounds familiar,” I tell her. She rolls her eyes.

A group of girls enters the restroom, speaking loudly, and I lower my voice. “Youlikeme. Don’t be like this. It doesn’t have to be like this.”

“I just…” she whispers.

“What?”

“I just wanted to do something for no reason other than because I felt like it,” she says. “That’s why I did it. And I wanted to know if I could.”

I shake my head. That’s the truth; I can tell. But it isn’t the entire truth.

“Devon, I’m sorry. I just can’t do this. Please don’t hate me.”

The bell rings for the next class period, and the rest of the girls leave the bathroom.

“Great, now I’m going to be late,” she says.

“Yeah, for study hall with Parks—like he gives a shit.”

Yeah, I know her entire schedule. She doesn’t even look surprised.

Ally reaches around me and unlocks the stall door. This time, I step to the side and let her pass.
