“Nope, don’t have a girlfriend on the team. What about you?” I ask.

That slack-jawed look on his face tells me he wasn’t ready for that one and isn’t sure how to react.

I smile and point at him, saying, “Gotcha! Just kidding, Mr. P. Have a great weekend,” then turn to leave.

He forces a laugh. “Yeah, good one. You, too.”

“Oh, Iabsolutelywill!” I say as I turn the corner. “Talk to you soon!”

“Dude, don’t go in there! You’re going to get us both killed! NO, NO, NO, SHIT! FUCK!” I yell, taking off my headset and throwing it across the room.

“Would you shut the fuck up?” Darci yells, banging on my bedroom door. “God, don’t you have a life? An animal to sacrifice or something? Can’t you just leave for once…ever?”

“Fuck off,” I say back to her.

“Darci, he’s leaving you alone, so leave him alone,” my dad shouts from downstairs.

“You don’t have to have your room next to his!” she yells back. “I don’t want to listen to his loser shit!”

“Darci, enough,” her mom says.

My phone vibrates in my pocket, and I pull it out.

Ally:She’s asleep…do you still want to come and get me?

Me:Yes. I’ll be there in ten. I’ll park near the bus stop.

“…if youguys would just make him shut up, it wouldn’t be a problem,” Darci shouts back, still arguing. “I can’t ignore him when his video games and his music and his voice areso loudthat…”

“Hey, Darci?” I say, pulling open the bedroom door. “It turns out Idohave an animal sacrifice tonight that I almost forgot about, so no worries—I’ll be leaving soon. Thanks for the reminder.”

She stomps back to her room, and I go to my desk for my wallet and keys.

“Devon? Are you still there? Don’t leave me hanging.”

Ah, right.

I pick my gaming headphones back up from the ground. “Nah, man. I’m leaving, actually, but…we’ll talk about that other stuff later this week. I’m going to get the money soon—I’ll text you.”

“Whatever, dude. Fine. Enjoy having a real life,” he says before I sign off.

I walk through the house, out the door, and get in my car. I start the engine, put it in reverse, and…shit.

Darci parked me in again.

Fucking idiot thinks her Honda CRV is a massive truck that can’t fit on one side of the driveway.

Not wanting to deal with her bullshit, I back the car up the entire two feet I’ve been gifted with, then put it in drive and go through the neighbor’s yard to the street.

I’ll probably catch shit for this, but how many times have we had this fight? Maybe now, they’ll deal with it.

When I get to Ally’s neighborhood, I park and send her a text. Ten minutes go by without a reply, and I start to worry that she’s changed her mind or gotten caught. I’m contemplating whether or not I should get out and go to the house when I see her emerge from the tree line.

“Hey,” she says when she gets in the car. She leans over and kisses me, then pulls down the visor and starts digging through her bag. I look her up and down, taking in the bare legs in her short denim shorts and her exposed stomach in a tight, black lace long-sleeved cropped top.

“Hey. You okay?”

She laughs. “Yeah. I can’t imagine a scenario where I don’t get caught, but…other than that, I’m okay.”
