I don’t need her to pay me. I don’t want to take her money, but I also know she won’t take no for an answer.

“That’s fine,” I tell her. “I’ll bring her home after we eat.”

“Try to get her to bed. She has school tomorrow. I’ll see you later.”

“I’ll try,” I say as she closes the door, knowing it won’t work out, just like it always doesn’t. Ivy will still be up when my mom gets home around ten.

“Hey, Ivy,” Darci says. “Wouldn’t you rather play with me today? I can swim with you, and then we can do our hair and makeup. We can have a Girls’ Day, andDevoncan write a book report.”

I shake my head. “No.”

“Come on. I’ll pay you, andyou can keep the babysitting money.”

“I want to have a Girls’ Day!” Ivy says. “Maybe Devon’s girlfriend can come, too.”

Darci laughs. “Devon doesn’t have a girlfriend.”

Shit.

“Okay, come on, Ivy. I think we have ice cream. Do you want some ice cream before we get in the pool?”

“He does have a girlfriend. He brought her over to our house. Her name is Ally.”

Darci’s eyes dart toward me, and if they could shoot lasers, I’m pretty sure that’s what they’d be doing right now.

“What does Ally look like?” she asks Ivy.

“She has long dark hair and dark eyes. Devon said her mom is in jail.”

Darci shakes her head and feigns laughter. “Well, that’s just…fucking great. I hope you enjoy never seeing her again.”

“Darci…you can’t tell them.”

“That lying fucking...bitch. I’m going to kill her.”

She storms off toward the staircase, and I run after her.

“Okay, what do you want? You want me to write your stupid fucking essay? I’ll do it.”

She ignores me, throws open the door to her bedroom, and grabs her phone from the charger.

“I should call Grace and tell her right now.”

“What do you want?” I ask her from the doorway. “What do you want to just…let it go? At least for now.”

“Why should I let it go, huh? That fucking bitch lied to me; she betrayed me withyou.”

“If you do this, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

She scoffs at my threat.

“Where doyougo at night, Darci? Does your mom know?”

She paces back and forth across the room.

“If I keep your secret, then you’re going to stay out of my way and out of my business.”

“No problem. I don’t like you anyway.”
