“Well, what? You are. You might as well make your move…or at least warn the poor girl.”

A couple of Darci’s friends walk by us in bikinis, then out the back sliding door.

“I’m going out to the pool,” Seth declares. “You guys coming?”

“Nah, I’m good.”

“I’ll go,” Isaac tells him.

They pass Darci on their way out the back sliding door, who scoffs, feigning disgust before marching into the kitchen and getting in my face.

“Did I tell you you could invite your loser friends over here?”

“I didn’t ask,” I tell her.

“Well, get them the fuck out of here!”

“No, I don’t think I will,” I tell her.

“Well, then maybe I’ll tell Mark and Grace about you and Ally, and you’ll never see her again. You should be thanking me for even letting her come over here after she betrayed me—”

“Darci, I’m sick of this shit. I did your stupid essay and your book reportandyour chem project like you wanted. But you don’t get to tell me what my friends can and can’t do at my house.”

“That’s exactly what I get to do, Devon.I own you.”

“No, you don’t. I can’t do this anymore. And you’re not going to do shit about it. I’m going to tell Ally right now.”

“No!” she shouts. “No, you’re not. And you’re going to keep doing whatever the fuck I want because Iwilltell them, and I’ll show her the picture. I’ll tell her you fucked me, and she will believe it. She’s so weak and insecure and—”

I move fast, and before I can think about it, I’m holding her by her hair with one hand and have the chef’s knife at her throat with the other. “I think you’re the one who doesn’t get it. I’m going to keep doing whatever the fuck I want, andyou’rethe one who isn’t going to do shit about it because if you do, I willfucking kill you!”

“Oh my god!” someone yells. A part of my brain registers that I have an audience, but I don’t really care.

“Do you hear me? I will fucking kill you!”

“Someone get him off me!” Darci yells.

“Devon?” Ally says weakly. I turn and see her standing next to us. “Devon, please stop.”

I look back to Darci. She looks fucking terrified…just like Ally.

“Devon!” Ally yells. “Stop! You’re scaring me!”

I look at Ally again, then over her shoulder toward the small crowd gathered in front of the kitchen. A couple of them are holding up phones, recording.

I stab the knife into the cutting board, then let Darci go and storm out of the kitchen. I look over my shoulder and see her fall into Ally’s arms, and the rest of those assholes—herfriendswho were just enjoying the show—start to move in on the two of them.I continue up the staircase to my room and slam the door behind me.

Maybe I fucked up just a little. Maybe I overreacted, but it’s fine; it’ll be fine. Maybe I scared Darci enough that she won’t say anything.

I remember the IDs and check my text messages.

James:Got the money. IDs will be ready soon—give me a week, ten days max.

Well, thank fuck for that. I let the phone slide out of my hands and onto the ground, then the door opens, and Ally quickly ducks inside, closing and locking it behind her.

“What the hell happened?” she asks.

“Ally…”
