What do I do?

Scream. Run. Dive for a knife.Call Axe.

I shift back again.Inhale, exhale, run.

“Don’t.”

“B-Ben?” My eyes burn with unshed tears. My stomach drops, knowing this isn’t going to be good. “Why are you here?” I ask, even though I know why. He’s here for me.

He doesn’t move. He doesn’t speak.

“Ben?” My voice quivers. This is bad. Something is really wrong.Did I fuck up? All those notes were just a game. He never meant anything by them, right?

‘Working at a biker shop? How low of you, Presley Ann. I will have to rid you of those dirty bikers.’

‘Ready to come home? This is your chance to do it on your terms.’

‘Are you fucking that dirty biker? I can’t believe you’d become such a low-life while away from me. What would you do without me?’

“We could have done this on your terms, Presley. But you have forced my hand.” His voice is dark, taking on a tone I’ve never heard from him before. “Walk in and shut the door, doll.”

I step back, my right foot outside the door. This isn’t right. Something is wrong. He steps out from the hallway, and my entire body turns to stone when I look at what he’s holding.

A gun.

“Now, Presley. Walk in and shut the door.”

My heart beats faster. The thumping vibrates through my entire body. Cold chills spread through me. This isn’t the Ben I know. How stupid have I been not to notice before this?

He scans me from head to toe. “You’ve gotten fat.” He looks at me with disgust, a sneer on his lips.

“It’s just baby weight. It’ll go away.” My voice comes out soft. Placating.

He scoffs. “Things are going to change. After tonight, you will realize that you need me. Things can always get worse than this.”

“What are you talking about? I don’t need you. I wanted you, but you screwed that up! I don’t plan to come back. I want—I want a divorce.” My voice is no longer soft as I try to hold my ground and find my courage. Remembering I am doing this for my sweetling as much as I am for me.

Faster than I can blink, he’s in front of me, shoving me back up against the front door. His free hand grips my throat and squeezes.

I gasp, reaching up to grab his arm as I try to drag in breaths. Tears leak from my eyes as I claw at his hand.

“Listen, and listen good. There will be no divorce. You aren’t leaving me. It’s time for your first lesson.” He releases me and steps back.

My body sags against the door as I suck in breaths, my hand rubbing at my now raw throat. This isn’t my Ben. I can’t believe it. He paces in front of me, pulling at his hair.

“I really didn’t want to do this, but you leave me no fucking choice!” He waves the hand with the gun in the air. “Baby, I promise I hate this as much as you will,” he whispers as he exhales a breath.

I don’t know what his plan is, but whatever it is, I need to get out. I have to get help. I should have gotten help to begin with. How stupid could I be?Find your strength, you are stronger now.I take a breath and let it out, hoping he will see rationally until I can at least form a plan to get out of here.

“You cheated on me. You cheated on me! I walked in on you. I saw you! And you still denied it. That isn’t someone I want to be with,” I say, my voice rising and cracking at the same time.Don’t cry, Presley. He doesn’t deserve to see your tears again.

He sneers, “I told you it doesn’t matter.Shedoesn’t matter. You couldn’t get pregnant. I had to find other ways to make sure I had a son. But then you got pregnant. So it all worked out.”

I shake my head again, but before I can respond, he slaps me, drawing blood in my mouth as I wince from the stinging on my cheek.

“Knock it off! You are coming home very soon. You won’t live like trash anymore. It’s embarrassing. I told the community you were at a special retreat to help you relax, and now we have a reason for you to come home from that retreat early.”

“What do you mean? What reason?” This is insane… I just thought he was in denial and his notes were just him trying to win me back. But this… He’s losing his mind.
