“For a minute, and I mean just a fuckingminute,War…” River glares, her high-heeled foot tapping against the floor. “Can you not be a complete fucking asshole to her? And I get that you have this whole twisted history with that crazed bitch in there, but Halen is—”

“Um, no? I won’t—" River steps up to me, her chest to my stomach.

My head shifts to the side as laughter bubbles out from between my lips. Before she gets comfortable, I pin her with the kind of coldness that I’ve never used on her before. “—baby sis. This is cute, but back the fuck up. Think about it, Riv.” I take a menacing step into her space, but she holds her own. “If you think that girl doesn’t need to be loved by toxicity and poison, then you may not know her at all. She may not be a coldhearted killer like the rest of us, but she has her own demons, and they all have to do with the way she needs to be lovedandfucked. So back. The fuck. Up.”

River’s anger dissipates the more she blinks, her eyes finally widening with understanding. She knows I’m right. They all do. Regardless of how I love Halen, the fact is that I do. The only way I know how to love, just so happens to be the only way she craves it.

The girl is fucking mine. Period.

My attention is back on Priest as if that didn’t just happen. We don’t have time for the theatrics of who’s on whose dick. Someone just shot up our island. “I don’t know anything right now. Katsia came to find me—”

Priest clears his throat.

I pause.

When he doesn’t say anything further, my shoulder rests against the wall and I arch a brow. “Got something to add?” I should have known he would. Considering we haven’t exactly had the time to talk about the party.

His pupils swallow the color of his eyes. “You’re my family, War. The only people I ever gave a fuck about are in this room, our families included. At any other time, sure—” The glow of his teeth is blinding against his tanned skin. “—I’d threaten that if you continue to fuck with my sister, I’d break your face. But we both know that what you said was true. And anyway, I know she can handle herself, but I will say this. Don’t be using that bitch to get to her. Katsia and all the fucking ones before her have a long line of fucking with the Malum men. Now, continue with what the fuck you were saying.”

I don’t bother to address any of his shit. He knows about Katsia already. I don’t need to repeat myself.

I continue. “There were bodies everywhere. As I’m sure you saw. Katsia had one held captive in her office, waiting for me to interrogate.”

His eyes don’t move from mine. “I don’t suppose you raged out and killed him, did you?”

My mouth opens a little. “Not exactly.”

“Gentlemen?” Vaden’s question comes out from gritted teeth. The beef between the two families tracks back further than him, but he’s a loyal fucker.

The need to put him out of his misery outweighs the tension emanating from Priest. “Nah, as resourceful as they are, this wasn’t them. Why would they, it makes no sense to hit Perdita. They’d just rip Riverside apart.”

Vaden’s eyes darken. “They could try.”

“They’d start a war…” I look between both him and Priest. “It lacks the finesse of their style to be them.”

Stella sighs.

We all turn, my arms crossing in front of myself. “Spit it out, Stells.”

“Well, I don’t know… why would Katsia have one held captive and he didn’t run? Was the door unlocked? Was he locked in? Was he bound? How have you not asked these questions?”

We all fall silent.

Priest’s heavy strides eat the space between us and the office. He shoves the doors open and my stomach hits the floor. Empty. Everyone is gone.

My heart thrashes against my ribs. What the fuck?

I trip on my feet as I stumble backward.

“Well, fuck!” Stella waves out to the setting in front of her. “What did I say?”

Halen

The worst partabout having an empire like the Elite Kings, is the enemies that come from it. You can’t have a kingdom without villains.

I tap on the three numbers on my phone and press it to my ear. It rings three times before someone picks up.

“Did you find him?”
