“It’s working,” Lucero added enthusiastically as she looked left and right. “We’re out.”

“We are.” Noelle smiled, increasing the speed of the car.

Yet something wouldn’t stop niggling at her conscience. It had been easy–too easy.

And as they drove for another twenty minutes, she realized why when she spotted a car blockade not even a mile ahead.

Five cars. All parked around the road to stop their advance.

“He knew,” Noelle whispered in dismay. “He fucking knew. But… how?”

“I don’t understand,” Lucero frowned.

Noelle slowed down the car as they reached the blockade, and right at that moment Sergio stepped out of his car, a knowing smirk on his face as he barked orders to his men.

They were both resigned as they watched the men come towards them to remove them from the car. Noelle didn’t even think to put up a fight or do something dangerous since she didn’t want to take any chances with her baby.

“There’s only one way he could have known, Lulu,” she said as she turned to her friend. “We need to ransack our apartment for listening devices.”

Lucero nodded numbly.

And just like that, Sergio had won that round.

But Noelle was not deterred.

For her baby she was capable of anything. She just needed to find the right moment to strike. After all, she was already used to biding her time and acting when the opportunity arose. She might hate the fact that every moment spent at the hacienda meant one more moment her baby was in danger, but she needed to be wiser.

Sergio might be smart. But there was one monumental difference between the two of them.

He fought for his ego.

She fought for the people she loved.

And that would always win.

Raf wincedas the car rattled to a stop. He’d been awake for a couple of hours already—long enough to rationalize where he was and what was happening to him.

His mind was still foggy and he had the barest recollection of what had happened. Yet he knew one thing for sure. Lucero had helped him escape.

If he tried hard enough, he could almost make out her form in front of him, her voice whispering in his ear as she told him to leave—go get help and come back for her.

He’d promised her he would return—of that, he was absolutely sure. But how he would go about that, he did not know. Especially as he had no idea where he was.

He was in the trunk of a car. Lucero had helped him hide there, hadn’t she?

Raf frowned as he couldn’t properly recall whether that had happened or if the image of her helping him had just been a product of his imagination. There was also a vague recollection of him picking the door to his cell—but with what key?

His mind was too confused to make out the details. But his purpose was clear.

He would get back home, get his rightful place, after which he would return to help her.

Nodding to himself, he searched in the darkness of the trunk for his water bottle, sloppily bringing it to his lips and drinking what was left of the liquid. The moment he’d woken up, he’d been incredibly parched—a thirst he didn’t seem to be able to quench.

A loud noise startled him, as well as movement right next to the trunk.

His eyes flared open as awareness seeped in. He was going to be discovered!
