“I’m serious,” Jack said. “It was work-related.”

The line was silent.

“You have every right to be angry,” said Jack.

“What was the text?”

“The one from Detective Green at MDPD. About the Tyler McCormick cold case.”

“Why would you read that, Jack?”

“It just popped up on your screen in preview, and I saw it. Then you came out of the shower wrapped in a towel, and I got a bit distracted. I’ve been meaning to tell you. I’m sorry.”

“I’m not sure what to say,” Andie said stiffly.

“We can talk more about it when I get home.”

“No,” she said. “We can’t ever talk about this. After all the jokes we’ve gotten about an FBI agent married to a criminal defense lawyer, this is about as close as we’ve come to a serious conflict of interest.”

Jack considered his words. “So, were you not completely truthful when you told me that you had only brief involvement in the Tyler McCormick case?”

“You’re accusingmeof being dishonest?”

“It’s just that Green didn’t take over the Tyler McCormick case until after Cruz retired. Why would Green be texting you about a break in the ‘TM case’ if, like you told me, the FBI’s involvement was over almost as soon as it started?”

“My God, you actually are accusing me,” she said, her disbelief tilting more toward anger.

“No. I’m just saying it seems strange that Green would text you out of the blue.”

Her cadence quickened, the way it did when she was really angry. “Maybe it’s because you went to see him and Cruz to ask about the case. Which, by the way, you didn’t tell me about until after it happened.”

“I didn’t know you were on the case until Cruz told me.”

“And even though he told you I used to be on the case, you looked at my phone and read the text from Detective Green.”

“Your phone was right there.”

“Oh, good defense, counselor. I can’t wait to hear your explanation as to why it took you two days to tell me about this.”

“I was meaning to—”

“Stop already. You were meaning to talk to me about Imani’s stunt in the courtroom. You were meaning to tell me you met with the cold-case detectives. It’s starting to sound like the same old song.”

Jack took a breath. “Can we stop talking about this?”

“No. Not yet. Did you tell your client what was in Detective Green’s text message?”

“I can’t tell you what I tell my client, honey.”

“Don’t call me ‘honey,’ when what you really mean is ‘dumbshit.’”

“I’m not calling you a dumbshit.”

“That’s exactly what you’re doing. ‘I can’t tell you what I tell my client, dumbshit.’ Fuck, Jack! This makes so much trouble for me, and you just don’t get it.”

“I do get it.”

“No, you don’t!”
