“Well, I figured since you had to monster out to protect yourself from me, I’m obviously some kind of threat to you.” I’m playing with fire and know it. This could just as easily boomerang and knock me on my ass.

He grabs my wrists, pulling my hands from his chest and yanking my arms to my sides. “Not a chance.”

“Oh, well, too bad then.” I close my hands into fists and I can feel the magic jolt quickly down my arms. Bright purple flames engulf my hands and I open my palms. He yelps, jumping back. I thrust one of the light balls his way and he dodges without much effort.

“No,” the professor screams. “Purple flames are illegal here in the classroom.”

I close my other hand and the purple light disappears. Purple flames are the hottest conjured and can burn even those from inferno.

Shayde rubs his arm and shakes his head. “Not nice,” he whispers and lowers himself once more, hunching over to attack.

I slowly began to back away, trying to create some distance between us. But Shayde is relentless, pushing forward with each strike, his face a mask of cold determination. I feel a wave of fear wash over me and realize just how outmatched I am. I have never faced an opponent like this before, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to hold my own against him.

Shayde launches himself again and I focus my energy, drawing on the power of the spirits surrounding me. For a moment, it feels as if time slows down. He’s still moving through the air but everything, including the impossibility of pausing time, occurs.

I decide it must be all in my head as the next moment, life returns, as does Shayde flying through the air.

I’m a necromancer and drawing upon those of the past is what I’m born to do. I can feel their presence, their ethereal forms swirling around me, waiting to be called upon like a light switch in a dark room. Once I flick it on, they’ll be here. With a deep breath, I raise my hands and release the building energy.

The spirits respond, materializing around me in a shimmering aura of light. I can see them and as is apparent by the open-mouthed astonish looks on the others in class, they can as well.

I feel their power coursing through me, filling me with a sense of strength, confidence, a purpose, and the knowledge that I have only skimmed the surface of what I’m capable of.

I meet his gaze and when his eyes widen for a fraction of a second, I wonder if I imagine what I see, or if Shayde, this dark elf, for the briefest of moments, feels fear.

The spirits howl a frightening battle cry and rather than holding them back, I let go and send them forth to their conquest.

Shayde’s flying form catches mid-flight and he’s forced back to the floor, landing on his feet like a cat. He throws his arm forward to punch the oncoming charges, but their ghostly forms pass through him as if he were battling nothing more than air itself. The essence of the former living entities attack and strike Shayde with a force that throws him back once more, causing him to land on his backside with a grunt.

For a moment, it seems as if I might have the upper hand here, but Shayde isn’t one to be taken down so easily. He scrambles back to his feet and his eyes of fire snap to mine like poisoned tips on an arrow. He launches a powerful attack, his own howl meeting the octave of the foe he’s facing as flames erupt from his mouth.

What the hell?

Is he a dragon?

The blaze bursts the spirits surrounding him into nothing more than spent molecules of gas. Free from their torment, he about-faces until he’s looking at me head on. And that’s when the fear leaves his body and manages to sink into mine.

I scream as terror explodes from every cell of my body. Not knowing what else to do, I fall to the floor and cover my head in the hope I survive this attack from the completely pissed off, fire-breathing, dark elf.

Expecting to feel a blow or something painful, I flinch when I hearhimgrunt.

He snarls and I catch what sounds like fists hitting the outside of a glass wall. But there is no glass wall… at least, not around me.

I take a chance to look up and find Shayde slamming his arms down on a force field I have managed to somehow conjure.

How?

I have no idea but it’s something I’ll figure out soon enough.

“Time,” calls out the professor.

Shayde’s chest rises and falls with his breathing and the snarl tugging his lips settles into nothing more than chagrin. He lost to a second year… Well, not really lost, but he didn’t win.

The moment I move to stand, the barrier around me disappears. I gasp and every fiber of my being wants to flee, but when Shayde doesn’t move, I mentally glue my feet to the floor to put on a false bravado.

For a moment, I can’t believe what I did today. Never in my life did I think I could be powerful enough, so capable of taking on an opponent like Shayde. Maybe it was the hint of victory I had on my face, or the fact nothing was between us anymore, but Shayde lunges for me and before I can protect myself, I’m on the floor, pinned underneath him.

“What,” I gasp and push against his chest. “What do you think—”
