I heard one of Nick’s men laugh that I was a hussy for Nick dick; I don’t know what that means, but it opened a pit in my stomach because I think he was making fun of me. A lot of Nick’s men have made comments about me. Some are curious, others are mean, but few are kind.

My bodyguards are the only ones who haven’t said anything to make me feel bad. Marco is nice, too. He cuts down anyone who tries to speak to me or about me. Granger, Wes, Tyler, and Marshall don’t talk to me much, but they’re kind when they do.

“Almost finished.” The doctor’s voice sounds far off. The ultrasound done before this came back clean and showed everything looked good inside. “Done.” She sits back, setting her instruments on a table and removing her gloves before helping me put my legs down. Nick offers a hand to sit me up and makes sure I’m covered.

“Do we know if you want birth control, Rue?” I glance up to Nick questioningly. “I see she’s ready for her next shot of Depo, but I don’t like the idea of giving that to her. It’s meant to be temporary, two years at most, and I’m thinking she hasn’t had a normal menstrual cycle since she began.”

“No. No birth control,” Nick says.

Miranda eyes him before giving me her full attention. “Do you understand any of what I just said?” My eyes shift towards Nick. “No, honey, I need you to tell me. I know Mr. Gambino means well; he has your best interests at heart, but I want to make sure you are informed as well.”

Nick’s arms cross and a scowl mars his face.

“I don’t.”

“Menstrual cycle is where you bleed monthly. It’s normal, releases unused eggs for getting pregnant and sheds the lining of your uterus. But the Depo shot I mentioned is a form of birth control that suppresses your bleeding.” That’s a lot to take in. “Birth control is meant to stop pregnancy when you’re sexually active.”

Oh.

I hate how much I have to learn about the world. I hate even more what I have to learn about my own body.

“Pregnancy can happen the first time you have sex, or it can take years. Everyone is different, but if you aren’t sure you want children, I suggest you take it, at least for a while. You are so innocent, Rue; you have so much to learn.”

“Sounds like you’re trying to talk her into it, doc.” Nick’s angry; I hear it in his voice.

“Because I don’t think she’s ready for a child, Nick. She needs to live. To explore life outside of captivity, even if only for a time.”

“Mr. Gambino,” I point out. My face scrunches up with annoyance. I don’t like her saying his first name.

“What?” she asks, puzzled.

Nick grins as he explains, “She doesn’t like my name on your lips.” His anger vanishes, replaced by amusement and heat.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for that.”

“She’ll take the pills,” he agrees, confusing me further.

Miranda leaves the room so I can redress. Nick watches me with calculation in his eyes, making me squirm as I slip into his shirt again. It’s all I’ve been wearing. His shirts and panties that showed up the day after I arrived at his estate. I don’t have anything else of my own anymore, which only serves to make me feel more uncomfortable in his care. It shouldn’t, and I love smelling him all day long, knowing I’m wearing something he’s touched. Nick Gambino is an enigma to me. I never know what’s going to happen with him.

“Ready?” He holds out a hand for me as I slide into the shoes that appeared this morning. I nod my head, not having much choice.

As we enter the reception area again, Sarge and Butch get to their feet, and I see they’ve been the topic of discussion for the nurses and patients. That all changes once I reappear with Nick. Soon, all eyes are on us, and I don’t like it.

Sweat beads along my forehead as we wait for Miranda, and I feel lightheaded as I try to hide behind Nick’s body. It doesn’t work well, though; I still feel the stares. His arm wraps around me, bringing me into his chest so I can hear his heart. The sound calms me, but I don’t understand why. No matter what situation we’re in, it helps my racing pulse.

From the first moment he touched me, I’ve felt a connection to him this way. Like nothing can get to me so long as I’m able to hear his blood pumping with the strong thumping of his most vital organ.

“Car ready?” He doesn’t look to Butch as he asks.

“Of course.” Butch sounds insulted that Nick might have thought otherwise.

“Here you go.” Miranda hands Nick a bag full of things. “Instructions for everything are in there, and if you or she have any questions, you can always call, and I’ll come out to the house.” Giving her a grateful smile, Nick guides me out with Sarge walking in front of us and Butch behind.

The elevator ride down is fast, and in front of the medical building is Bruno, waiting with the back door of Nick’s fancy car open. Once I’m settled in the seat, Sarge climbs in the back with us while Butch and Bruno sit up front.

“Where to?” Bruno asks, but no one answers.

Staring around at the men in the vehicle, I realize they’re waiting on me for an answer. I always forget their orders are to take direction from me. I shrug, not knowing what anyone wants me to say.
