Crouching down, his gaze narrows on mine as he brings up a hand and presses it to my forehead. “Are you feeling alright, little one?”

I’d been feeling a little warm, but nothing I was concerned about. “Fine. Why?”

Handing the tablet to Brock, Nick glances up at Kane. “That doctor friend of yours still in town?” Kane nods, watching me like a hawk now. “Ask her to come here. Meet her at the gate.”

When I insisted I was fine after what happened at the mall, and then the revelations from Theias Lorde came along, Nick had opted not to have the new doctor visit.

“Already on her way,” Kane informs him.

“Come on.” Picking me up, Nick leaves Marco in charge. Sarge, Bruno, and Brock follow behind us. “You guys notice anything off with her?” he asks them. I’m still confused.

“Eating more,” Bruno finally responds. Nick’s frown deepens.

“Are you sure you’re feeling okay?” he asks me again, only stopping when Winston comes out of the kitchen with the most divine-smelling pizza in his hands.

“Ah, boss, you’re finally catching on, are you?” Winston hands me the pizza as I reach for it.

“Catching onto what?” I ask. Nick stares between us, and I shrug because I have no idea what he’s talking about.

Winston chuckles before shaking his head. “I suspect our dear girl is carrying a bun in her oven.” Everyone freezes, and I’m further confused.

“What does that mean?” I don’t feel quite as silly asking that now, the way I used to.

“You’re sure?” Nick hasn’t stopped staring holes into Winston’s head.

“Well, no. That’s not my area of expertise. However, I’ve cooked for enough expecting women as a young man that I’ve gotten a sense for it.”

“Nick?”

“You pregnant, little girl?” His adoring eyes finally find mine. I shrug. I wouldn’t even begin to know how to guess. I haven’t learned about that yet.

Taking a bite of pizza, I offer one to Nick, but he scowls along with the rest of the men around me. “More for me,” I mutter around a mouthful.

CHAPTER 16

Nick

Kane enters the house with his doctor friend before I can question Rue further—not that I think she’d be able to give me an answer. Not yet. She doesn’t know enough about her own body to recognize if things have changed.

“Mr. Gambino, this is Tabitha Green,” Kane introduces us. “And this is Rue.” The woman smiles at my girl, obviously already warned that she is the priority.

“You want to go upstairs, Rue, or in there?” I nod towards the family room. It’s hardly used, but Rue has been watching movies and playing on her iPad in there when she gets bored of listening to me and my men, which isn’t often, actually.

“There,” she whispers to me as she crunches on another bite of pizza.

“Is that pineapple?” Tabitha asks her. Rue looks down and nods reluctantly. “Delicious, it’s my favorite, too.” Rue grins and offers her a piece once I’ve settled her on the sofa. “You sure?”

“Yes. Nobody else here likes it, so I eat too much.” Her cheeks tint red.

“Is there any such thing?” Tabitha laughs as she sits next to Rue. They’re already talking like they’re old friends.

“Little girl, I’ve got to go back. Call if you need me.” She pouts but agrees. “Pregnancy test,” I tell Kane and Sarge before I leave. Kane looks shocked, but they both nod. Brock and Bruno remain on the outskirts of the room.

Returning to the den, I shut the doors behind me. “Marco, talk to me.”

But it’s Tyler who speaks up. “I think you should invite them here. A peace offering. They don’t know Ricci is dead, nor that he was selling off more than he could chew. You can offer to give the money back he paid, and a shipment of Springfield Hellcats just arrived. You could give him a crate or two to appease him.”

“Has Cato called yet?” He’d know better than anyone if the cartel would accept my offering.
