He did.

James dialed it while Lainie and Cole watched. Just when she thought it would roll to voice mail, a woman answered. “Hello?”

James introduced himself. “I need to ask you a couple of questions about a case I’m working. Would you be free in about an hour to talk?”

“Um. Sure. You’re coming to the house?”

“If that’s all right.”

“I guess. It’s kind of a wreck. I haven’t been much of a housekeeper, since...”

“I understand. We just need to ask you a few questions.”

“All right, then. I’ll be here.”

It didn’t take long for them to thank Chad and leave with plans to return once they discovered something. Of course, this put the exhumation plans on hold. A fact that crawled all over Lainie’s nerves.

They retrieved James’ Jeep, and Cole followed behind them once more. She’d noticed James had taken more pain medicine on the way out of the office, but not once did he complain. “You okay?”

“You see everything, don’t you?”

“Obviously not everything.”

He shot her a compassionate look and squeezed her fingers. Not wanting to think about how blind she’d been when it came to Adam, she turned her thoughts in a different direction. “Adam’s family thinks there’s a grave with his name on it, but that he’s not in it,” she murmured. “They believe it’s all a fabrication, designed to makemebelieve he’s dead, ensuring he’s safe from my murderous intentions. That’s their theory, right?”

“Exactly.”

“Only everything that’s going on would lead one to believe the exact opposite. That he wants me to believe he’s alive.”

“Yes.”

She sighed. “So, they’re really not involved in all of this, are they?”

“If they know something, they’re not sure exactly what they know. They just know what someone told them, and they’re not talking.”

“What’s the best way to find out if someone has a picture or video of the funeral and gravesite?” Lainie asked.

“We start with the family.”

Lainie checked the mirrors constantly, noting how fast the action had become a habit. Just one more reason to find the guy messing with her life. She scowled and stayed lost in her thoughts the entire ride. It wasn’t until James was pulling to the curb of the Clark home that she pulled herself back to the present.

“Welcome back,” James said.

“Sorry. Just trying to work through some things.”

“Let me know if you want to bounce them off me.”

“Thank you. I will.” She glanced at her phone to hide her growing attraction for her best friend’s brother. His tenderness and care were like magnets. But would she feel the same if she didn’t have all the crazy in her life at the moment? Once she was out of the car, she looked at James from the corner of her eye. Like the gentleman he was, he waited for her to step in front of him and then followed her up the porch steps to the front door.

Yeah, she’d still feel the same.

And that was just a little scary.

And exciting.

And—

The door opened before he could knock. Cole joined them and they made their way inside after a round of introductions.
