She went still and he wondered if he’d offended her. Then she let out a low sigh. “I’ll do that. Thanks, James.”

He spun the wheel and they pulled to the curb of the address on the GPS. Cole stopped behind them.

Lainie climbed out and shot him a pleading look. “Don’t make me stay in the car.”

“What if she recognizes you?”

She frowned at him. “Why would she?”

“What if Adam or someone showed her a picture?”

Lainie sighed. “Can we just see?” She crossed her arms. “I don’t want to stay out here by myself.”

James suppressed a groan. “Fine. But no talking.”

“Not a word.” She glanced at the empty drive. “Is anyone even here?”

“Guess we’ll find out.”

James knocked on the door and shortly, footfalls on the foyer hardwoods sounded.

A woman in her midsixties opened it with a raised brow. “Yes?”

James held up his badge and introduced himself and Cole. When he turned to Lainie, she smiled. “I’m Elaine Jackson,” she said before he could speak, then snapped her lips shut. She didn’t want him to call her by her nickname. He gave a faint nod of approval.

“I see,” the woman said. “What can I help you with?”

“Are you Victoria Irwin?” Cole asked.

“I am.”

A small gasp escaped Lainie, but James didn’t think anyone else heard it. He glanced at her and she swallowed hard. He had a feeling she’d been expecting someone a lot younger. Frankly, he had too. So much for the idea that she had a child with Adam. She was more the age of Adam’s mother. “Do you mind if we come in? We’d like to ask you a few questions about some banking transactions.”

Confusion flickered in her eyes, but she stepped back. “All right. Let’s go into the sunroom.”

They followed her through the foyer, past the den, and into a bright room filled with greenery and comfortable furniture. “Nice,” Cole said.

She smiled. “It’s my favorite room.”

Once they were all settled, she clasped her hands in her lap. “Now, what can I do for you?”

“We’d like to know your relationship to Myles and Adam Williams?”

She stilled for a fraction of a second, and James thought she lost a shade of color in her face. “May I ask why you need to know that?”

“According to a reliable source, Adam died about eighteen months ago. Recently, some questions about his death have come up and we’re looking into it. During the course of our investigation, we came across some bank statements. They show a number of deposits and withdrawals in the same amounts. And those withdrawals—and checks—were made out to you.”

“From Adam’s account?”

“Yes.”

“Well, I can’t explain that, but I do get monthly support from ... a friend.”

“Myles Williams,” James said.

She laughed. “Now, darling, I can’t say. He’s a married man and I won’t go spreading tales.”

Or risk jeopardizing her golden goose? “That’s fine. He’s left a paper trail. Not much of one, I’ll grant you, but it’s there. So, we know Myles is paying you on a monthly basis, which means, to us, that you’re still involved with him in some way. I don’t need the details, I just have a question. Do you have any reason to believe Adam is alive?”
