“We’ll take care of that first thing tomorrow,” Luke promised.

Some time laterTalia escorted Octavia and Phoebe down the elevator to the guest suite on the fourth floor. When she returned to her apartment she found Luke waiting, duffel bag in one hand, pack slung over his shoulder. Her spirits plunged so fast and so far that she felt a little light-headed.

“Where are you going?” she asked, trying for casual and cool. Just curious.

“You tell me,” Luke said.

She knew him well enough now to understand that he was serious. He needed an answer. So did she.

“All right, let’s try this again,” she said. “Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t want to go anywhere,” he said.

Her spirits pulled out of the dive and reversed course.

“Well, don’t,” she said.

He watched her, his eyes burning. “Don’t? That’s what you said when I told you I thought I could stop someone’s heart with my talent. Just don’t.”

“You have a tendency to overthink things, Luke. Probably your academic side.”

“Maybe. To be clear, if I stay here, I don’t want to sleep in your spare bedroom.”

She smiled, went toward him, and slipped her arms around his neck. “Well, don’t.”

He dropped the duffel on the floor and let the pack slide off his shoulder. His mouth came down on hers in a kiss that was charged with his unique heat and energy. The zing was intoxicating. Intimate. Joyful.

He might not stay forever, but he was here tonight, and he wanted her as much as she wanted him. That was enough. For now.

CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE

While he hadwaited for Talia to decide his fate he had vowed that if he got the chance to make love to her again he would not rush things the way he had the first time. He would take it slow, show her that he could be a thoughtful lover. He wanted to seduce her in the truest sense of the word. He wanted to make certain that she never forgot him—because he would never forget her.

By the time he joined her in the shadowed bed he was already forced to pull hard on his self-control. The urge to lose himself in her warmth and scent threatened to overwhelm him. The feel of her sleek, soft body was intoxicating. He opened all of his senses, savoring the vital, sensual energy of her aura.

“Luke,” she whispered, her voice husky with desire.

She twisted against him, twining one leg around his. Her response thrilled and delighted him but it was also a challenge. When she wrapped his erection in one small fist it was all he could do not to climax.

Determined to maintain control, he reached down between herthighs. She was hot and wet and shivering with tension. He probed gently, searching out the sensitive places.

“Yes,” she gasped. “Yes.”

He was not satisfied until he made her shiver and tighten, until he felt her nails sinking into his back. Until she was commanding him to finish what he had started.

Only then did he settle between her upraised knees and propel himself slowly, deliberately into her tight, tense heat.

Finally, inevitably, the fever broke. Talia went over the edge with a muffled shriek, her hands clenched in his hair. He drove himself home one last time and followed her into the soft darkness.
