Shay hops out of the passenger side, jogging around the front of the car, the engine still running.

I look toward the empty interior of the car and my heart sinks like a boulder. “Where’s Juliet?”

“I tried calling you,” Sam replies breathlessly, plunging his fingers into his hair and tugging at the strands. “They arrested her leaving the club…”

“Theywhat?!” A growl tears from my throat as my wolf pushes forward in rage. I rush up to Shay, getting right up in her face. “When? How? I told Tayla to take you girls out the rear exit!”

Shay shrinks back, showing her neck in submission. “She did take us out that way, but there were cops back there waiting,” she whimpers.

Sam shoves at my chest, putting himself between me and his girl. “Hey man, back off!”

I glare at Shay accusingly over Sam’s shoulder. “If she got arrested, how’dyoumake it out?”

“I had a passable fake ID! She only had her real one…”

Sam pushes me back another step, and he’s lucky he’s my beta and best friend or I’d fucking clock him for touching me right now. My blood is boiling and I’m about to explode.

“Call the chief,” Sam says firmly, his stern eyes locked on mine. And that’s what it takes to bring me back from the brink, becausefuck, he’s right. I’m completely misdirecting my anger right now, and I can’t blame him for stepping in to defend his mate when she didn’t do anything wrong.

I need to get my head on straight. Remain calm. Be proactive instead of reactive.

I lift my phone and pull up the police chief’s contact, hitting dial and taking deep breaths to steady myself as the line rings.

No need to get worked up.

I’ll go to the station and pick her up, just like before.

As soon as I hear the click of the chief picking up the other end of the line, I start speaking before he can even say hello. “Me again. I thought we’d already discussed Juliet Anderson?”

“What about her?” he asks.

“I’ve just been informed that a couple of your officers hauled her in.”

He mutters a curse under his breath, then I hear the sound of a keyboard clicking again.Good.He must still be at the station, working to try to get this mess cleared up.

“No, I’ve got nothing for Juliet Anderson in here…”

“What?” I whip back around to look at Shay questioningly. “She was arrested here almost an hour ago.”

There’s more clicking, then the chief blows out a slow breath. “I don’t know what to tell you, Cole. She’s not here. She was never booked.”

I tighten my hand around my phone, nearly crushing it in my grip as my heart pounds frantically. “Then where the fuck is she?!”

The cold metal of the handcuffs digs into my wrists as I shift positions against the hard plastic seat in the back of the squad car, leaning forward to alleviate the pressure against them. They’re cuffed behind me, leaving little room for comfort as I’m jostled around with every turn we take and every bump in the road.

I can’t believe this is happening again.

The first time, at least I could cry foul because I hadn’t actually done what I was being accused of. That’s not the case tonight, though- which has me nervous that I may not get out of this one as easily. I know Cole’s well-connected, but I’ve yet to learn how far his reach really goes. As it is, my stomach’s in knots, twisted with uncertainty about my fate.

The officer driving the car suddenly takes a left turn at high speed, sending me sliding across the back seat and slamming into the door. My head thumps against the window and I cry out on impact, but the only response from the cops is the sound of their low chuckles, like my misery is amusing to them.Assholes.

I wiggle until I’m upright again, craning my neck to gaze out the back window of the cruiser at the city behind us. The police station I was taken to last time was at the heart of downtown, but with the city now at our backs, it’s clear that isn’t our destination.

Something about this doesn’t feel right.

With every mile we put between us and downtown, my inner wolf grows increasingly agitated, my intuition telling me that something’s off about this whole thing.
