It doesn’t take me long to find him. He’s hanging back, waiting for me, and as soon as I get close enough, I pounce.

I take him down to the dirt, our limbs tangling as we tumble and roll together across the ground. As soon as we slide to a stop, our wolves start nuzzling into each other’s necks, rubbing up against one another like they can’t get enough contact.

‘Te amo,’ I say through the newly formed mind-link between us, testing it out.

‘Te amo,’ his deep voice rumbles through my head in reply, and my frisky wolf nuzzles against his once more, a surge of joy spearing through me.

We were already bonded, but now we’re linked, united in every way.

It’s perfect, and I’m not sure I’ve ever been as happy and fulfilled as I am right now.

I spring to my feet and the two of us take off running, weaving through the trees and keeping pace with one another as we fall in to join the rest of our pack. Yips of excitement greet us, and I slip back to the recesses of my consciousness to let my wolf take the lead, relishing in how content and wild and free I feel beneath the warm glow of the full moon overhead.

Javi and I are a little bit delayed returning to the packhouse after the run. Between the endorphins and the adrenaline, both of us were riding such a high that we conspired to stray from the pack to steal some alone time out in the forest. Our wolves were more than happy to tuck themselves away for a while so we could make love beneath the stars, and when we finally do arrive back at the packhouse and find our clothes, there’s some sort of commotion happening on the back lawn.

“What’s going on?” I ask the first person I come across as Javi and I hustle toward the packhouse.

It’s a teenager from the Westfield pack, and she looks positively giddy as she breathlessly tells me, “Alpha found his mate!”

“What?!” I screech, my blonde hair whipping me in the face as I snap my head back and forth in search of my brother.

“Yeah, she’s over there!” she replies excitedly, pointing to the back patio.

I stare in the direction she’s indicating, spotting a gaggle of Westfield pack members surrounding a blonde girl- and when I realize who it is, I swear my heart stops beating for a second.

Javi leans in beside me, evidently just as caught off guard as I am. “Is that…?”

“Cheyenne,” I finish for him, her name leaving my lips in a whoosh of breath. I jerk my head up to peer at Javi, eyes wide and mouth agape. “She’s Iver’smate?!”

The stunned expression on his face mirrors the one I’m sure is on my own, and without another word, the two of us rush across the lawn, shouldering our way through the crowd to get to Cheyenne.

She’s standing there in bewilderment, looking completely out of her depth as people congratulate her and try to introduce themselves. I reach in to tug her out of the fray, shooing the others away as I pull her aside.

As soon as I get Cheyenne alone, I turn my shocked gaze on her, my own excitement bubbling over. “Oh my gosh, you and Iver?!”

Cheyenne gives me a tight-lipped smile and nods, shifting her weight uncomfortably, and I pause as I take in her demeanor, my brows furrowing in confusion.

“What’s wrong?”

Her amber eyes lift to meet mine, rimmed with sadness. “I’m already marked,” she mutters, her gaze dropping as she kicks the toe of a sneaker against the dirt. “No alpha wants that. I’m damaged goods.”

“Iver isn’t like that,” I insist, shaking my head. Javi moves in to comfort Chey, wrapping an arm around her shoulders while I glance around the packhouse lawn in search of my brother. “Where is he, anyways?” I wonder aloud.

“You’re his fated mate, he’s not gonna care about that,” Javi says gently, rubbing Cheyenne’s arm with an open palm. “You’re a fucking catch, Chey.”

“Maybe before,” she mumbles. “But now…”

Javi heaves a sigh, looking to me to provide some sort of reassurance. I step in on the other side of Cheyenne, taking her hand and giving it a little squeeze. “My brother isn’t like that, I promise,” I tell her. “He already saw your mark, and he didn’t care. The only thing he cared about was whether you were already taken. He’s had a crush on you since the first time he saw you.”

“Do you see the way he’s looking at you right now?” Javi chimes in.

I glance over at my mate, then follow his gaze to see Iver crossing the lawn toward us with a glass clutched in each hand. He’s practically got hearts in his eyes, a huge smile stretching his lips as he makes a beeline toward us, completely ignoring Javi and I and marching right up to Chey.

“Vodka cranberry, right?” he asks, extending a hand to offer Cheyenne one of the glasses he’s holding.

“Yeah, thanks,” she mumbles, taking it from him. She flinches when their fingers brush, and Javi and I exchange a knowing look.

Sparks.
