A spark of realization flickers in her eyes.

Mierda.

She didn’t miss that.

“C’mon, Javier, you think I haven’t smelled her on you?” Mom asks, stepping closer to me.

I grit my teeth, bracing myself for a conversation I’m not ready to have.

My mom stops in front of me, peering up at me with her big brown eyes. “Who is she?”

“No one,” I grumble, looking away.

“Javier.”

“She’s just some girl, alright?” I sigh, sidestepping around her and pacing across the room, putting my back to her.

“Is she one of them?”

I scrub my hands over my face, my back still turned as I quietly answer, “Yes.”

“Interesting.”

I hear the shuffle of footsteps and I glance over my shoulder to see my mother returning to the chair, plopping down onto it. She crosses one leg over the other, leaning back and folding her arms across her chest as she pins me with a stern stare. “Tell me about her.”

“There’s nothing to tell,” I grit out, turning around to face her again. “We’ve hung out a few times. It isn’t serious.”

“After all this time, you really think you can lie to me?” she tuts, shaking her head disapprovingly. “I know your tells, mijo. Start talking.”

“Why, so you can use her against me?” I grumble.

She gasps, flinching back and feigning shock. “I’d never do that! I just want to be part of your life, Javier. You’re my only son, you’re all I have. And you’ve been so distant lately, it’s breaking my heart.”

She sounds pretty convincing; I’ll give her that. And damnit, I wish I didn’t have such a soft spot for her. I know my mother has her flaws, but I love the woman. She’s always been at my side, supporting me every step of the way, molding and shaping my life for success. Granted, she has a habit of pushing her own agenda, but hasn’t everything she’s done thus far been for my benefit?

Maybe I’m judging her too harshly.

“She’s the sister of one of the alphas,” I say, rounding the bed and sinking down to sit on the edge of it, across from her.

Mom’s eyes light up. “That’s perfect!” she exclaims, uncrossing her arms and sitting up straighter. “It’s your way in.”

“There are other ways,” I murmur, dropping my gaze to the floor. “We can stay the course.”

“No, this ismuchbetter,” she insists, beaming a smile at me. “I knew you got your good looks for a reason, I’m sure she’s eating out of the palm of your hand. And how can they deny us when you’re involved with one of their own?”

I shake my head, frowning. “I don’t wanna use her like that.”

I lift my gaze, and Mom’s expression softens when she meets my eyes.

“You care for her.”

I give her a shallow nod.

She leans forward, reaching out both hands toward me and wiggling her fingers, and I lean toward her with a sigh, placing my hands in hers. “That’s wonderful, Javier,” she says, holding eye contact. “But if you want to keep her, you know what you have to do.”

“Yeah, I think I do,” I murmur.

“Stick to the plan,” she says matter-of-factly, giving my hands a squeeze. “You know your duty to your pack, what we’re here for. Don’t let us down.”
