I wait for him to elaborate, but nothing. That’s it? How should I take that? I don’t know, but I guess I don’t have to. I just need to plug my nose and do this.

A ghost of a smile lifts the corner of my lips. “I appreciate you giving me a choice in the matter.” I clasp my hands, ready to get this show on the road. Pun intended. “So, with that—let’s do it.”

“Riley Glenn, would you do me the honor of becoming my pretend girlfriend?” Maddox’s bright, beautiful smile meets his crystalline eyes.

He’s never flashed that smile, oranysmile, at me before, and it does things to my body—a thrumming in my chest, a buzzing in my skin. My lips split into a grin. “I’ll be your pretend girlfriend, Maddox Winter.” But my voice is firm when I say, “If we’re doing this, we’re doing it right. No seeing other people—Rilox will be just Rilox.”

Maddox’s face drops. “Whoa—let’s not go overboard.”

My palm is up. “No D-listers on the side.”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.” My face pinches. “Are you thirty-four going on fourteen?”

“Maybe.” He groans. “Fine.”

“Does this mean you have to break up with Jemma?” I quirk a brow.

“No. That was nothing. I got her a promotion—a PR job with Bingeflix—so she got what she wanted.” He lets out a sigh of relief. “As far as you and me, there are a few other things. I’m a hand holder, so we’d have to do that to look legit.”

I blink. “Hand holder.You.”

“Yes. It’s nice.” He takes my hand and caresses my palm. “Like this.”

He’s right—it’s not so bad. “Okay.” I shrug. “And I’m a hugger, so we’d have to do that too.” I just made that up.

“So we’ll have to wrap our arms around each other like this.” He puts his arms around me like he’s done before on set.

Also, not so bad. It’s actually kinda good.

I stay a beat longer before pulling away. “Got it.”

The sound of my printer buzzing from my office makes me almost jump, but then I remember Skye is in there. I’ve been so distressed, I forgot about her. But why is she using my printer?

Maddox seems unfazed because his eyes lock with mine, and he says, “And we’d have to kiss.”

As he moves his lips toward mine, I face-palm him. “Nope. I don’t need a demonstration of that.”

He clears his throat and moves away. “Fair enough.” Then he says, “Iris, Smith?”

They’re back in my apartment in a flash.

After Maddox says we’ll do it, Smith points at us. “No getting agents involved in this, okay?”

“Fine with me.” Maddox shrugs.

“I don’t have an agent.” Landing this role happened so fast and out of nowhere, I never got one.

That’s when Skye appears from my office holding a stack of papers. She buzzes up to Smith, extending her hand. “Skye. Riley’s publicist.”

What the…

“Hi.” Smith shakes her hand, a confused look on his face. “Where did you come from?”

She hitches a thumb over her shoulder. “I was printing up itineraries for Rilox.” She holds one out. “Here’s your copy.”

I’m still trying to catch up to the whiplash that is Skye. Who is, apparently, now my publicist. With an itinerary.
