“Goodnight.” And the door is officially closed. And of course, I hear his lock click.

As I lie in my huge king-sized bed, alone, I can’t help but wonder if he wishes he was in it with me.

Leap of Faith

The next morning, I wake to Maddox knocking at the adjoining door.

Crappity crap!“I slept in,” I call out, my voice husky from sleep. I’m used to waking up early, but not in this time zone.

“I have coffee,” he says.

“Then you may enter.”

He walks through the door with two to-go cups, one for me.

“Thank you.” My eyes light up.

“Yes. It’s a thank-you gift.”

“For what?” I sit up, taking the coffee.

“For saving my life.”

My face pinches. “What are you talking about?”

“Forcing me to get those rabies shots. I didn’t take it seriously, and I should have.”

I laugh. “I know! The nurses let you have it, didn’t they?”

“They did.” His lips tick up. “I need you around. Keeping me on my toes. And alive.”

He needs me around. And what does that mean, exactly? I don’t know, and I’m not going to push anything—no way. I’m going to enjoy this moment for what it is and not analyze it.

With our coffee, we go out to my room’s balcony where we soak in the view of the sun rising over the ocean, which creates a million golden flickers across the water.

We get dressed quickly and start hiking as the rising sun makes the sky look almost otherworldly. The blues and pinks waving through it meet the ocean beyond the jagged, moss-colored hills. I would move here just so I could wake up to this every day.

“Incredible,” Maddox says.

“It’s magical.” I hesitate, swallowing hard. “It’s nice to be sharing it with you.”

His eyes crinkle. “It is.”

I can’t believe how comfortable we’ve become around each other, and so fast. His shoulder casually brushes mine, and I’m surprised by how familiar it feels. I know good and well by now that what he and I share is beyond attraction. There are real feelings involved, and I’m pretty sure they’re mutual.

But where does it all go? How does it end? Or, realistically, whendoes it end? And once it does, how do we continue being co-stars?

This could all blow up in a fiery ball of hell, and in front of the entire world. Smith would be in seventh heaven! Ugh. The thought is too much, so I push it from my mind.

I busy myself by taking another series of photos, convincing Maddox to pose in a few for me.

As we hike, a hedgehog runs in front of us, and I’m so excited, I can barely get my phone out fast enough to record it. “Shhh,” I say, angling my phone and pressing record. “Hedgehogs are my favorite animal.”

“Seriously?” Maddox whispers.

“I know, it’s weird.”
