“Don’t stop. God, don’t stop.” My body grips him tighter.

Then he rocks harder, faster, while pinching a nipple. I gasp as the lightning bolts of desire strike me.

We’re riding in a fevered rhythm of sweat and desire, and he knows just how long to hold on so that we come apart together.

My orgasm rips through me while I feel every single throb of his.

We lie in each other’s arms as our heartbeats slow. I know this is the part where I have to go into the guest room. I hate it, but it’s what Maddox needs.

I start to get up, and he pulls me back. “Stay.”

Stay.He asked me to stay. All my hollow spaces fill with crackling white light.

“Really?” I slide back under the covers.

“Yes. I want you here.”

“Okay.”

I start to curl up next to him, but he says, “Wait,” before sitting up in bed.

I sit up with him. “What is it?”

“I um…” he trails off. “I need to tell you something first.”

“Sure.”

He gets up and opens the door to let Farmer in. “I sometimes have nightmares.”

“Okay.” I wait for him to tell me more as Farmer jumps on the bed and cuddles next to me.

Maddox stares at the opposite wall. After a long pause, he says, “This is tough, sorry.”

“Take your time.”

He goes into a trance-like state before he says, “My parents’ relationship was over years before they got divorced. They stayed together for me and the press, which only jacked up their resentment toward each other. When they finally got divorced, my dad wasn’t letting my mom see me as much as she wanted to. They were in a nasty custody battle. But Mom kept begging, and Dad begrudgingly agreed to let me stay with her for one night.”

Maddox scrubs Farmer’s head, then strokes his ears. “So there I was at her house, five years old, and she left me alone, just for an hour, to meet with her agent. She said it was important, but she’d be back as soon as she could. She told me not to tell Dad, which I was fine with because I was excited to getto be the big kid who could stay home and watch movies. I got to take care of myself.” He stops and rakes his hand through his hair, showing me that this is pushing him.

I squeeze his hand but say nothing.

“I’ve never told anyone this before.”

My heart warms. “Take all the time you need.”

He blinks. “My mom was gone for hours, and I got tired, so I went to bed.” His jaw tenses, and his nose flares. “An intruder broke into the house and entered my room. When I woke up and saw this huge masked man, I was terrified. And so angry at myself for not locking my bedroom door.”

“Oh, no.” I’m trying to keep myself calm, as I know he needs that from me right now, but it’s difficult.

“I raced for the phone, but he was bigger and faster than me, and he took it away. Then the guy picked me up. I’m sure he was going to kidnap me.” Maddox squeezes his eyes shut. “I was doing everything in my power to get away, so he hit me in the face, and things went blurry. It was the most terrifying moment of my life. I knew I was too out of it to fight back. Not that I could have done much, anyway. I was so small.” Maddox’s eyes glaze over, and I know he needs a moment.

Ineed a moment.

“Luckily, Dad showed up. He walked in the door because he’d somehow found out my mom had left to meet with her agent. The guy punched Dad in the face too, knocking him for a loop, then ran away.”

“Wow.” That’s the only word I can manage to speak.

“Yeah. When Dad came to, he ran out of the house, but it was too late. The guy was gone. And he never got caught. My mom didn’t have any security cameras or anything.”
