“Do you know what that means?” I ask gently.

She blinks, jerking her head. “Yes, I know what it means. I’ve watched movies and read…you know, books.”

I smile. “Dirty romances?”

She shrugs. “So what if I did?”

It strikes me as…cute, although I’m not the sort of man who usually finds anything cute. I’ve been on Sovereign Mountain for so long that most things are just…grim. I haven’t seen anything as beautiful, as soft, and, well, cute, as she is up here in a long time.

She shifts her thighs, squeezing them together for half a second. I catch the movement and I know what it means. She’s turned on by my proposition.

Now I just have to get her to admit that.

Maybe if I can get her to play once, she’ll see how good I can make her feel. That I can offer her so much more than just protection.

“Is that what you like?” she asks hoarsely.

“Do I like being a dominant?” I ask. “Yes, that’s why I want you as a submissive. I pick and choose my partners carefully and I’ve wanted you as mine for a while.”

It’s not the whole truth, but she doesn’t need the exact details. She swallows hard. Her fingers tug at the blanket. Tearing the threads.

“This is really important for you,” she says quietly. “I guess I wasn’t aware people did this seriously.”

“People take BDSM relationships seriously,” I say. “Some more so than marriage.”

That makes her chew on her lower lip. “It’s not legal, is it?”

“No, not at all. It’s an honor system.”

“You strike me as the sort of man who takes that seriously.”

“Deadly.”

She stares at me, still making a meal of her lower lip. Then she shakes her head hard enough to make her hair fall over her breasts. That’s probably a good thing because now they’re out of sight and out of mind.

“How long do I have to stay?” Her brows draw together.

“I think a year would buy you all the former Stowe land,” I say. “During which, you won’t pay anything on the mortgage, I’ll handle that. And you’ll be safe here.”

“And if I want out?” Her voice is small.

“You can leave, but your payments will resume. And I can’t protect you out there.”

Her eyes glisten and I know she’s fighting back tears. A part of me wants to have mercy on her, she’s innocent. But the bigger part knows this is the only way. If I don’t get this woman somehow, I’m going to lose my mind. She’s all I can think about.

I can’t live like this anymore.

“No, no, I can’t do that,” she says huskily, wiping her eyes.

“Why?”

“You don’t know me.”

“I probably know you better than you think.”

That is an understatement. I get to my feet and cross the room to my workspace. I have a copy of the proposed contract on my desk. Her eyes bore into my back as I flip through it and make sure it’s in order.

“Take a look at it,” I say, walking over and tossing it into her lap. “I think you’ll find it more than fair.”
