I grip her body and fuck her back. The bed shakes against the wall. Outside the window, snow falls gently over the lake and the mountains are barely kissed with the rising sun. I should be outside starting chores right now. No doubt Westin is wondering where I am. But I can’t pry myself from bed until I see her come.

I stroke her clit with my thumb. The combination sends her over the edge with a silent cry. Her body shudders and I follow her, pleasure shooting down my spine. When I pull from her, my cum slips out and trickles down her thighs.

She falls back onto the pillows and watches me get ready for the day.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

KEIRA

We broke some rules last night. I can’t tell if he regrets it or not.

I feel like I should regret it. But I don’t.

I feel like I should hate what he did to me. But I didn’t.

All I know for certain is that the further we fall together, and the more I see of him, the more I realize I had no idea who I was getting into a contract with.

Last night, when he got in from chores, he said they found my horses on the other side of the ranch. It’s far away, so it’ll take two days to round them up. There’s a cabin on the other side of the property and he said he’d be gone overnight there.

I begged him to let me go too. He said no. I hate hearing that word from him because he doesn’t elaborate. He just says no, and it doesn’t even sound unkind, so I can’t be mad at him.

But this morning, he shook me awake and said, “You can come with me, redbird.” I don’t know what made him change his mind, but I’m already packed.

He said he’d be back from chores by noon.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

KEIRA

We ride up to the northern side of Sovereign Mountain Ranch later that day. Gerard has two saddlebags and I brought a backpack. He says the cabin is stocked with enough food for a week in case of emergencies. I’m imagining a shack, but he laughs and says, no, it’s just a small version of the main house.

He rides Shadow and I take Bluebell. I wanted to take Angel because she’s finally allowed me to ride her around the paddock without trouble. She trusts me more every day. But Gerard shakes his head when I ask if I can ride her out. He says no, he doesn’t trust Angel not to throw me if she spooks.

So I take the painted mare instead, pushed deep in the pocket of my coat.

“Do you think I’ll ever get Angel to the point where I can take her out?” I ask.

I turn in the saddle. We’re out beyond the pastures, heading up the gradual tilt of the highest northern point of Sovereign Mountain. He’s riding behind me, hat pulled low over his face. In the last few days, he’s let his beard get thicker. Last night after we talked, he fell asleep on his back and I ran my fingers overhis face and down his chest. Enjoying the way he feels when he’s rough like this.

“What’s that, redbird?” He lifts his head.

“Do you think Angel’s confident enough to be ridden out?”

He considers it, squinting up at the mountain looming closer. “She’s unsure of herself, never been allowed out beyond a fence.”

It feels like he’s not talking about Angel. I chew the inside of my cheek until a bit of blood stains my tongue.

“You’re good at being patient,” I say.

“Some things are worth being patient for,” he says. “If you really want Angel to be your horse, you’ll work at her pace. If she feels forced, she’ll always be nervous.”

My chest feels strange, like there’s something sitting on it. My fingers tighten around the reins.

It would be a lie to say he hasn’t forced a great deal onto me since we met. I wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t offered me a contract. Or showed up at my door when my house was burning and rode off with me on Shadow.

So why haven’t I shied away from his touch?

Perhaps because I trust him. Like it or not, when I look up and see him coming, I feel safe.
