Page 24 of Kiss To Tempt

I figured since he didn’t come the very next day, he wouldn’t come at all, but apparently, I was mistaken. “If I remember correctly, I was pretty clear the other day. We don’t have anything to talk about.”

“Vanessa,” John sighs, taking a step closer. “Don’t be difficult…”

“Difficult?” I gritted through clenched teeth. “I’m being difficult?”

I swear if he says that word one more time, I just might be tempted to strangle him. Or kick him in the balls. Kiara would be proud.

“Yes, you are. I’m just here to talk.”

“There is nothing to talk about.” I point my finger at his chest; the need to stab him with it to knock some sense into him is overwhelming. “You said all you had to loud and clear when you put that engagement ring on another woman’s finger while you were still dating me! So don’t you dare treat me like I’m the difficult one after giving you the last eight years of my life.”

By the time the words are all out, I’m a panting mess. My eyes burn, but I grip the counter, digging my fingers into the hardwood until my knuckles turn white.

I’m not going to cry, not in front of him. I’m not—

“Nessa?”

My head snaps up at the sound of my name. I blink, willing my eyes to focus.

Quinn.

Of course, it’s him.

Because what is one more embarrassment added to the day?

* * *

QUINN

“Quinn,” she breathes, those long lashes fluttering as if she’s trying to fight back the tears. My jaw hardens while I watch her, my whole body stiff as I fight the need to turn around and connect my fist to the man standing in front of her. The man who hurt her.

What a stupid asshole.

“What’s going on?” I ask, making my way to stand by her side, my gaze shifting to her ex. The dude doesn’t look happy in the slightest but ask me if I give a damn.

“Nothing. John was just leaving.”

“Vanessa,” John sighs, clearly exasperated.

I stop next to her, my hand slipping around her waist. Her muscles tighten, and I’m about to pull away—the last thing I want is to upset her even more—when she relaxes into my touch.

John looks from Vanessa to me, his eyes narrowing at my hand caressing the curve of her waist. His teeth clench, jaw working before he shifts his attention to Vanessa, his cheeks growing red.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I think Ness was pretty clear,” I say calmly. But my voice is the only calm thing about me. If he isn’t careful with what he says, he really might lose a tooth or two.

“This is bullshit.”

“You need to leave, John.” She glances toward the door leading to the back of the center before shifting her attention to her ex. “Now. And do not come back, not here and not to my house.”

His jaw clenches, the vein in his forehead throbbing as he stares at her. “Fine, whatever. You were a lousy lay anyway.”

Oh, now he’s done it.

“Are you…” I move toward John, but Vanessa grabs my hand and tugs me back. The little weasel uses the opportunity to slip away.

I glance toward the door, but Vanessa’s fingers dig into my forearm. “Let him go; he’s not worth it.”
