Maybe they left already? Quinn sent the last message over an hour ago when they got to the bar. Maybe…

That’s when I spot him.

But he’s not alone.

My stomach sinks as I stop in my tracks for the second time in a matter of minutes.

A blonde girl is standing in front of Quinn, so close their feet are touching. Her red lips move as she says something, a flirtatious smile on her lips. I watch as she raises her hand, her finger tracing his chest.

And he lets her.

He actually lets her.

There’s familiarity in the way she touches him as if this isn’t the first time she’s done it.

Bile rises in my throat as I stare, my gaze zeroed in on him. On them. My ears start to ring, edges of my vision turn blurry.

No, this can’t be.

Not again.

Not Quinn.

But it’s him, alright.

It’s him.

The man who held me gently. The man who kissed me like he couldn’t get enough of me. The man who knows my body as well as I do. The man who made me feel special, who made me feel like I matter.

And he’s with another girl.

You knew this would happen;a jaded voice tells me. I lift my hand, rubbing over my chest as my lungs tighten painfully, cold sweat washing over me.You knew this would happen. You should have guarded your heart more.

Nate straightens, a pool stick in his hand as he walks around the table. He’s the first to notice me. He opens his mouth, but before he can say a word, I’m already turning around, and for the second time today, I run.

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

QUINN

“I didn’t realize you were still here,” Kelly says, smiling brightly as she walks to me.

I glance at her before returning my attention to the pool table where Mason is currently making his move. After we finished our dinner, the guys suggested we play pool, which I was fine with. A part of me was still hoping Vanessa would show up soon.

“Still here,” I say, grabbing my beer and taking a swig from the bottle.

Kelly places her glass on the high-top table. “Didn’t find a job?”

“I did.” I look down at her. “I’m starting next week.”

“Really?” She tilts her head, interest sparking in her brown eyes. “Where are you going?”

“Actually, I’m staying here.”

I just got the call earlier this morning. The principal of Blairwood’s high school offered me a spot as the new P.E. teacher and coach for the basketball team. He told me to come in tomorrow to go over some last-minute details and sign my contract.

It was actually happening. I’m staying in Blairwood. I was so excited, and the first thing I wanted to do was pick up my phone and call Vanessa. But then I remembered our agreement and her openly avoiding talking about the future and my job hunt. So I decided to just wait and talk to her when I saw her.

“No shit?”
