Page 7 of Kiss To Tempt

How is this my life? Maybe this is all just a misunderstanding of sorts. Maybe I’m just drea—

“Well,” the girl, because seriously, she looks way too young to be anything else, giggles. “Technically a fiancee.” Her smile grows even bigger if possible. “We just got engaged.”

And if she needs to confirm it, she wiggles her fingers, a big rock sparkling under the light of the nearby street lamp.

If she punched me in the gut, it wouldn’t have hurt like her words do right this moment.

I stagger back, the buzzing in my ears growing louder. “F-fiancee?” I stutter out, barely holding onto my sanity.

No, this can’t be happening. It can’t—

“Ness, I can ex—” John tries again, but a hard, almost crazy laugh comes out of me.

“Explain? Explain what exactly,Johnny?” I spat out, unable to hold onto my fury any longer.

The girl finally realizes that something’s wrong. About freaking time too.

Her smile falls, and she looks between the two of us. “Who’s this woman, Johnny?”

“Get in the car, Amanda,” he says, barely looking at her.

“Oh, no. No, no, no…” I shake my head. “She’s not going anywhere.” I shift my gaze to her. Amanda. I was right. She can’t be more than twenty if that. One of his students? Was he screwing around behind my back with hisstudentall this time? “I’m his girlfriend. Have been for the lasteight years. Not like it means anything to him since he’s obviously been screwing around behind my back.”

Amanda’s eyes turn wide. At the revelation? Or maybe my crude words? Either way, I don’t have it in me to care.

My boyfriend of eight years has been cheating on me, for God only knows how long, with a girl that’s ten years my junior. I’m the one who gets to be upset, not her.

John runs his fingers through his hair. A sheer layer of sweat coats his face. “It’s not like that.”

“Oh, so you haven’t been screwing around behind my back, and you haven’t just gotten engaged after leading me on for the last eight years?” I nod my head. “That makes so much more sense. I think you should get a reward for the best boyfriend of the year.”

His face turns pale. Good, he should be afraid because I’m done with being placated.

“You’re obviously too upset to talk. Maybe we should do it another time when you calm down.”

I just stare at him.

He did not just say that.

“Talk?” I shake my head, disgusted. “There will be no more talking. I think you did all the talking that was necessary, and it wasn’t with me.”

Eight years. I’ve given this man eight years of my life, only for him to get engaged behind my back to somebody else?Engaged. And he thinksIneed to calm down?

I march toward John and jab my finger into his chest. “Don’t call me. Don’t talk to me. Don’t come near me. I don’t want to see your cheating, manipulative ass ever again in my life.”

Each jab of my finger is harder than the last, my words coming out altogether as I try to keep my cool, but it’s not working.

Eight years.

I swing the bag in my hand—the bag that I specifically picked out for him with his favorite food because I wanted to make him feel better after a long day at work.

Fucking asshole.

The bag hits him in the chest, the food spilling out from the force of the contact. The steak and mashed potatoes, as well as my pasta, get squished against his favorite blue shirt, the one I bought him for his birthday last year.

“Never again!” I yell before turning around on the balls of my feet and marching away.

John yells my name, but I don’t slow down. My fingers shake as I unlock my car and slide inside, barely managing to put the key in the ignition.
