“Like how she was a bit silly,” I smile, looking across the grounds to find my nephew wrestling with our new puppy. He somehow WWE body-slams himself, the way children have been doing in living rooms since the dawn of time, cackling as the dog bounds onto him with all four feet and playfully bites at the boy’s shaggy hair. “We talked about the time she wanted to fly.”

Instantly, Felix throws his head back and laughs. “Let me guess… she jumped off the roof? With or without a bedsheet as her parachute?”

“Shower curtain, actually.” I press a kiss to the side of his shoulder and snicker. “She fell and broke her wrist in three places.”

“Sohercontribution is the reason I’ve been so fucking stressed these last eighteen years?” He brings us to a stop and turns to look down into my eyes. Cupping my face, he draws me to my toes and nips at the tip of my nose. “Cato took that jump when he was seven. Broke his wrist and collarbone.”

“You’re blaming that on Charlotte?” I drawl. “Really, Malone? Classy.”

“It’s in the genes, Darling.” He feathers a kiss to my lips and inhales so I know he’s tasting my breath. Testing, to make sure it’s nottoosweet. “None of the rest of us were ever so stupid.”

“So now you’d like to discuss nature versus nurture?” I tease. “Or would you prefer to discuss DNA? Because he’s a mixture of MaloneandCannon blood. No one can wonder why he’s the unruliest of five brothers, out to make a mess.”

“Kinda implies that whatever demon spawn you and I eventually create,” another kiss, “will probably burn the world down.”

“Fire needs oxygen to thrive.” I breathe easier as he draws me closer. “To be dangerous. Beautiful.”

“My favorite things.” He closes the space between us and takes my lips with his. “Dangerous. Beautiful. Crazy. And all mine.”
