He wasn't sleeping with Charlie.

"Does your mom live with you?"Woah, not the question I thought was going to come out of my mouth.

"Yeah," Brady shifts uncomfortably. "I promised my dad I wouldn't put her in a home. So, she moved in with me two years ago. She has a round-the-clock care team. On hard days, though, it's easier if I take care of her."

I step closer and squeeze Brady's arm. "That's really sweet of you."

"I should have told you."

"No," I chew on my lip. "You didn't have to, but I'm glad you did."

"I should get going," Brady swallows hard.

"Yeah," I drop my arm and step back. "Thank you for the crackers and doll. Brianna will love it."

Brady nods. "Brianna comes first. You know that, right? If she's sick or she needs you, then I don't mind you if need to work from home or take the day off."

"I do now," I smile. "Thank you again."

"Good night, Iz," he steps off the porch and I find myself following him, wishing he would stay one second longer.

I watch as he climbs into his car and backs out of the driveway. When his taillights disappear down the road, I splay a hand over my beating heart.

Chapter 13

"You're here today?" Brady sounds surprised as he stops in front of my desk.

"Brianna was still sleeping when I left," I tell him. "My mom said she'll call if they need me. The doll was a huge hit. She loved it."

Brady shifts his weight from one foot to the other. "Yeah?"

I smile up at him. "Yeah, she carried it around everywhere with her last night."

"I'm glad," Brady shoves his hands into his pockets. "Your hair looks nice today."

I touch the back of my neck, suddenly nervous. I normally wear my hair down, but I pulled it into a clip today. "Thanks."

"And the dress," he bites his lip. The red dress that he paid for. "It's a good color on you."

"Geneva said I'm a Winter," I inform him. "So, bright red brings out the clarity in my features."

"Am I supposed to know what that means?" he laughs.

I try to keep from grinning, but I fail miserably. "No."

Brady pulls his hand from his pocket and raps his knuckles on my desk. "You busy for lunch today?"

I shake my head. "I don't think so."

"How do you feel about burgers at Bruce's?" he asks.

"Um..." I trail off as I lick my lips nervously. "What about Charlie and her team?"

Brady furrows his brow. "The board said they weren't interested in her app idea, so she left yesterday."

"Oh," I scratch the side of my face.

"Burgers?" he presses.
