I kiss him once more before opening the door to his office and glancing over my shoulder. Brady's standing there, the bulge in his pants obvious. I laugh before maneuvering through the crowd of bar hoppers as I head toward the door. My phone vibrates in my pocket when I reach the exit. I slip it out and see the message.
Thanks for tonight.
I place a hand over my heart as I turn to see Brady through the crowd. He gives me a sheepish smile as I wave and head out the door.
"What took so long?" Liam complains. "I told you three hours. It's been four."
"I'm sorry," I apologize. "I lost track of time."
Liam backs out of the parking spot. "It was worth it. You looked like you were having a great time."
"Yeah," I click my tongue. "Don't tell my mom, though. I'm already preparing myself for a lecture when I get home."
"If it makes you feel any better," Liam shrugs, "I'm sure I'll be getting a lecture from my mom, too."
"About staying out too late?" I ask.
"Eh," Liam exhales, "she thinks it's time I settle down."
"Why haven't you?"
"I haven't found someone I want to spend a lifetime with yet," he answers.
"I'm sure Aunt Jenny means well," I offer.
"I'm sure Aunt Fal means well, too," he smacks his lips together.
Mom is waiting on the front porch when I get home. She's wrapped up in a robe with a cup of tea in hand.
"Hey," I greet her.
"Hey," she says as she pats the empty seat beside her.
I guess we're getting straight to the lecture part.
"Lay it on me," I flinch as I sit next to her.
She sighs. "How is Brady?"
"Um..." I tilt my head to the side. "That's not what I thought you were going to say."
"You said his mom has dementia," she remembers.
"Yeah."
"Did he like the food?"
"What are you doing?" I raise my eyebrows at her.
"I'm being a mom, Iz."
I scratch the side of my face. "We don't have to do this. I know how you feel about my...situation."
"You know," she laughs, "if it wasn't for your dad, I don't think I ever would have settled down."
"Why not?"
Mom takes a sip of her tea. "No one ever felt like...like home. Like somewhere to settle down. Not until him."
