Besides, if I escaped now, who was to say it would be safe for me to go back home and get on with my life? The more I thought about it, the more I felt like a normal life after this was impossible. Not unless I found out why Lockwood had kidnapped me.

Mason would come through for me. I didn’t know why, but I felt deep in my body that he was going to do everything in his power.

I felt like he was...

He was someone I was supposed to meet. Like it was meant to be.

Chapter Nine

Mason

I heard Lockwood’s light footsteps coming down the stairs half an hour later. It had taken him a while to realize his key was missing. A good thing for me, since I’d needed time to think after Maya refused to come with me. I would’ve taken her to safety and burned this place down. She would’ve watched it go up in flames from my truck.

I was still going to do it. It would just have to wait.

Lockwood found me playing with his key, casually rolling it between my fingers. He stopped in front of me, arms crossed over his chest.

“Did you call my boss?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“And what did Taros tell you?”

“That you like acting out, but you’re loyal.”

“Damn straight.” I got up.

Lockwood didn’t flinch even as I towered over him. His confidence was impressive. I held the key out to him.

“Did you go inside?” he said as he took it and studied it, as if to make sure it was unscratched.

“I did.”

He nodded. “Should I call your boss again?”

“What for?”

He lifted an eyebrow and waited for me to elaborate.

“You said she did something to deserve this,” I said. “What did she do?”

“Again with the questions,” he sighed. “You only need to do your job, guard.”

I wasn’t going to get anything out of him. It was a useless strategy anyway, since every time he opened his mouth, he was probably lying.

“I have a proposition for you,” I said. “You must feed her three times a day. Let me do it and add a weekly bonus to my salary.”

Lockwood cocked his head to the side. For a moment, he studied me intensely.

“That would make my life easier,” he said, eventually. “I can’t trust the housekeeper, you understand. I barely feel comfortable letting her clean your room and bring your meals.”

I shrugged. “Figured as much. I can do it for you, make sure she’s fed. You won’t have to come down here all the time, and you can focus on your work in the lab.”

Lockwood pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. A habit that had become irritating to me.

“You got a deal,” he said. “It would take a lot off my shoulders. I don’t like dealing with her. I mean, you went in there, you saw the state of that room. You know what I mean. And she’s not the most easy-going creature in the world.”

“I’m used to dealing with difficult people,” I said.
