“Brother, you have a lot of explaining to do. Where did you find her?”

It didn’t escape me that he didn’t seem happy for me. I was sure it wasn’t envy, but just the fact that he could tell I was about to put him in a difficult situation.

“I was hired to guard her by the madman who kidnapped her and locked her up in his basement. It was wrong, and you know me. I won’t betray my morality for money. And then I discovered she is my mate, and I burned that place to the ground, with the madman in it. There was no other way.”

“The madman who hired you. You killed a client of Monster Security Agency.” He shook his head. There was no anger in his voice. No disappointment either. It was more like he was in awe of my choice. “You’re done, Mason. This time, for real. You’ll never work again. Not in this field.”

“I don’t care. She’s all that matters to me.”

“Not if you can’t provide for her.” There was sadness in his voice this time, and I knew why. He thought he couldn’t provide for Kara anymore.

“I’ll find a way. I don’t give up easily, and neither should you.”

“What happens now? Why did you bring her here?”

I rubbed the back of my head. “This job was supposed to be long-term and live-in. I gave up my apartment and put my things in storage. Not that I have a lot to my name.” On second thought, what if he was right and I really couldn’t provide for Maya? “I didn’t want to take her to her place because I don’t know if she’ll be safe there.”

“Her captor is dead.”

“I have a feeling there’s more to this story than we can see at the moment.”

“Like what?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. It’s just a hunch. It’s like a piece of the puzzle is missing.”

“Okay. Well, you’re welcome here, of course. Stay for as long as you need. You can use our bedroom upstairs.” He thought for a moment. “Is that what you wanted to ask me? It’s not that huge of a favor.”

I cringed. “No, that’s not it. I need an alibi. The police will investigate the fire, and they won’t be able to tell what started it.”

He grinned. “You started it.”

“Not needing gasoline and a match makes starting fires easy.” I shook my head at my own misplaced sarcasm. “I erased Maya’s traces. They won’t know she was ever there. It’s best that theydon’t, so they don’t involve her. After everything, she deserves to be left alone. But there will be evidence that I was hired by Lockwood. All they have to do is call the MSA. So, I’m going to need you to say that I was here, with you and your family. That I had the day off and I spent it with you.”

“You got it.” He didn’t even hesitate, and I could just hug him and kiss him. I didn’t do it, knowing he would’ve punched me. “I’ll talk to Kara and the kids. We’ll get our stories straight. Is that it?”

“Yes. Thank you, brother.”

He laughed. “Did you think I would say no?”

“It’s a huge ask.”

“Between brothers, nothing is a huge ask.”

We finished our coffee, and I offered to make more. As I was filling the coffeemaker with water, I heard the girls coming down the stairs. A few seconds later, they were in the kitchen. I turned to look at them, and when I saw Maya, my heart skipped a beat.

She was gorgeous. Freshly bathed, with her damp hair falling down her back, full lips as rosy as her flushed cheeks, and her blue eyes brighter than ever – she was a sight to behold. For the first time, I noticed the discreet splatter of freckles on her slightly upturned nose. Kara had lent her a pair of jeans and a shirt, and even though they were a size bigger, I could tell they were covering the most beautiful body I’d ever seen on a woman, human or not.

“How are you feeling?” I asked.

“So much better.”

“You look good.” She cocked an eyebrow at me, and I added quickly, “I mean, you look amazing.”

She laughed. “Thank you. I feel like a whole new person.”

“Coffee?”

“Yes, please!”
