His eyes widened. “I did not know that. Thank you for the... um... information?”

“You’re welcome.”

“I hope you’re not too disappointed.” He chuckled as he draped an arm over me.

“Not at all.” I stuck a finger in my mouth and licked it with interest. “Mmm... not at all.”

His eyes glowed red. “You’re such a tease.”

I hid my face in his neck. We stayed like that for minutes on end, just listening to each other’s heartbeat.

My racing thoughts wouldn’t let me rest for long, though.

“Now what?” I asked him. “After all that’s happened, how do I get back to my life?”

He sighed. “One day at a time, Maya. That’s all I can say. I’m sorry. But know that I am here for you. Always. You don’t have to do it alone.”

“Good. If I’m with you, then I can do it one day at a time.”

Even though it was the middle of the day, I drifted to sleep.

Chapter Nineteen

Mason

My phone vibrated on the nightstand. I reached for it, trying not to wake up Maya. I frowned when I saw a text from my brother.

“Didn’t want to disturb you, but the police are here.”

I got out of bed and dressed in a matter of seconds. Maya cracked open an eye.

“Where are you going?”

“Go back to sleep,” I said, leaning in to kiss her lips and draw the duvet over her naked form. “Everything is fine.”

She nodded and yawned. My heart was beating so wildly that I was surprised she couldn’t hear it. It thrummed in my ears, making me feel a little sick to my stomach. I rushed downstairs as I urged myself to calm down. I knew this was going to happen. There was nothing to be worried about. The four of us had the story straight, and there was no reason for the police to not believe us.

All the evidence at the Lockwood mansion had been destroyed. The only eyewitness who knew what had happened and could cause trouble was Victoria Lockwood, but she’d seemed relieved to finally escape. She’d told me she wanted to enjoy the little time she had just being free and doing the things she liked, and I believed her. Now I wasn’t so sure. As I entered the living room, where Kara and Goliath were sitting with two policemen – one human, the other werewolf – I prayed Victoria Lockwood hadn’t played me.

“Mason Stonewarden?” the wolfman asked.

I nodded and took a seat in one of the empty armchairs. Kara jumped to her feet and disappeared into the kitchen. Goliath seemed to be perfectly calm and composed, and that gave me courage.

“I am detective Cross,” the wolfman said, “And this is detective Pierce. We will ask you some questions if that’s alright.”

“Sure. What happened, detectives?”

“You were recently hired by Dr. Vincent Lockwood. Can you tell us what your job is?”

“Certainly. He hired me as his bodyguard. I am to patrol the grounds and keep an eye out for intruders. When he goes to the city, I am to accompany him and provide security.”

“I understand,” Pierce said. “When did you start working for him?”

“Four days ago.”

“And today you didn’t go to work...?”

“He gave me the day off. Last night, he said he didn’t need me, so I came to visit my brother and his family. Why? What’s wrong?”
