As I packed up my things to head out of work for the day, I smiled at my coworker, Bridget. She and I had become great friends ever since I started working here months ago. While it was possible her words could have indicated we had less than a month before the official start of the ski season, that wasn’t what she was referring to.

Bridget was talking about Griffin.

“I am beyond excited,” I confirmed. “This is the point at which I think it starts to get easier, because it feels like I’m in the homestretch now.”

“And just think, you’ll have him here for months before you have to be separated again,” she noted.

There was that, too.

God, I couldn’t wait until that happened. Months. We’d have whole months of time together before he’d have to return to Hawaii again.

“I know. It’s crazy. I feel like I can now start counting the days instead of the months or weeks,” I replied.

“You should find a way to celebrate tonight,” she suggested. “This is a big deal.”

I tipped my head to the side. “That’s not a bad idea. What are your plans for tonight? Want to help me celebrate?”

Bridget laughed. “I’m always the one dragging you out somewhere, hoping you’ll let loose and have some fun. I don’t think I’ve ever had you ask me. I’m definitely down for some fun tonight.”

“You’re still here for another hour, right?” I asked her.

She nodded. “Yeah.”

“Okay, so I’ll head back to my place and get myself ready, and you can text me when you’re done here. Does that work?”

“That works for me.”

“What do you think we should do tonight?” I questioned her.

Bridget shook her head. “Oh no. You have to figure this one out on your own. It’s your celebration. But whatever you decide, I’m happy to go along with you. You should call Janine, too, and see if she wants to join us.”

That wasn’t a bad idea.

I stared at her for a few seconds before offering a nod. “Okay. I’ll figure it out between now and the next time you text me.”

“Perfect.”

At that, I grabbed my bag, said goodbye, and walked out of the resort hotel. Then, I was walking back toward my building.

On my way, I attempted to do exactly what I told Bridget I was going to do. I tried to come up with a plan for what to do tonight. I wanted to call Janine to ask her to join in the fun, but without a clue how I wanted to celebrate, it seemed pointless. And this wasn’t the kind of thing I wanted to put no real thought into and just wing it. I wanted it to be special.

Because it was just as Bridget said. This was my celebration, one that I was excited to have.

Less than a month.

Griffin was going to be here in less than a month, and I couldn’t wait. Months. He’d be here for whole months.

And after having so much time away from him, I didn’t doubt we’d do everything we could to make up for that time. It would be just like my visit to Hawaii had been, only longer and with me needing to go to work.

That trip had been wonderful. While being in Hawaii for the first time was magical all on its own, it paled in comparison to being with Griffin again. We’d had such a great time, doing everything he’d told me we’d do.

The only bad part about the trip was having to say goodbye. That had been one of the worst days of my life. There were times now when I could still recall just how painful it had been. I often wondered if Griffin had felt the same way about leaving me in April as I felt leaving him after that trip in the summer to visit him two months ago. Knowing how difficult it had been and still having a moment when that pain would slice through me, I hated to think he’d experienced that same feeling.

While my intentions had been good when I first left work, unfortunately, I found myself completely distracted by my thoughts of Griffin to come up with any good ideas about how to best celebrate being less than a month away from being able to see him again.

And now, I’d arrived back at my place.

Maybe I could give him a call and see what he thought Bridget, Janine, and I should do. I mean, I was celebrating his upcoming return to Colorado, so perhaps it was only fair he offered some input.
