Suddenly, Kate’s face pops into my head and I remember the electricity that ran up my arm when her small hand shook mine.

Kate is shorter than me by at least a foot, maybe more. Her long, dark hair flows down her back in waves. But her eyes. Her bright green eyes get to me. She seems so much wiser than anyone I’ve ever met. Like she’s been through some terrible things and doesn’t suffer fools.

She’s someone I’d like to get to know better, if only for a night or two. Kane warned me off, though. She’s either spoken for or has other plans.

Too bad. I could show her a good time and let her forget her troubles, at least for a little while.

My body reacts to the thought, and I realize I might need a cold shower if I don’t change my thoughts right now.

Good thing I won’t see the Bagel Lady until I work another Sunday.

CHAPTER 5

KATE

What a week it has been.

The guy that runs Pizza Pizzaz next door, Jose, called the health inspector on me because he got mad at me when I let some Girl Scouts sell cookies outside my store.

The health inspector gave me a passing grade and shook his head at the bogus complaint which stated I had rats crawling all over my ovens, counters, and tables. Even though the inspector knew it was a bogus charge, he had no other option but to investigate, which meant I had to close my business until he could inspect it.

I was closed for two days.

Then he called the fire inspector to complain that I’m smoking up both his business and mine and said that my ovens were a fire hazard and that he fears for his life and his livelihood. This time I didn’t have to close and wait for an inspection, but I still had to be inspected.

Although, I got vindication when the Fire Inspector inspected both of our businesses and he was told to fix his oven hoods before they become a problem.

They cited him. It was beautiful.

Right now, I’m getting ready for my night out with Grace, and she was right. I’ve been looking forward to this all week. Maybe we should start making more plans. Knowing we’re going out tonight made my fucked up week bearable.

“Honk. Honk.”

“Is Grace here?” I look out the window as Grace pulls up in my driveway and gets out.

“Honk.”

“Give her a second. She doesn’t have wings like you.”

“Knock, knock. Anyone home?” Grace lets herself in as usual.

“Honk.”

“Hello Wilbur. How are you tonight?” Grace asks as she pulls out a treat for him.

“Honk.”

“In here. I’m almost done.”

“Okay. I’ve ordered a ride share.”

“I’ll be done shortly.” I straighten my dress that I just bought. It seems too short, so I try pulling it down more, but it won’t budge. I decide I can’t wear this and I open my closet door to find something else to wear.

“Holy shit! You look hot!”

I turn around. “It’s too short. I’m trying to find my favorite pair of jeans. I’ll just wear those.”

“Absolutely not. You’re wearing that dress or we’re not going. You are smokin’, girl.”
