He rested a hand on her knee. “Like I said, you really managed the situation.”

“I still panicked. You know how bad I am in an emergency.” She lowered her head.

“But you weren’t this time.” He squeezed her leg. “You found a way to get to the vet fast, and you must have kept it together or you wouldn’t have made it there. That’s a major thing. Don’t discount it.”

“I didn’t have a choice. Angie was a mess, and I…channeled you. That’s how I got through it.”

What was she talking about? “You channeled me?”

“Yeah.” She brushed her hair back and shrugged. “You know, like when we were in the tree, and you talked to me? I thought maybe if I talked to Angie, it might calm her. And then I asked her to sing to Murphy. Did you know she has a beautiful voice?”

He shook his head. “No, but I knew something happened between you two.” He cupped her cheek with his hand. “You have no idea how special you are.”

“You’re making too much of all this.” She squirmed.

“I don’t think so. I saw Angie acting nice to her family. It was nothing short of a miracle. What did you say to her?”

“Eh, we just talked about fashion and stuff.”

“Why are you brushing this off when you deserve some credit here?”

She frowned. “I don’t know. I shared some things with her that are kind of hard to talk about for me.”

Now it made sense. She must have discussed some of her hurtful past to get through to the kid. “Well, whatever you said left an impression.”

“Angie has work to do, but I think she’s on her way.”

“What was she talking about with the clothes?” He cocked his head.

“I told her I’d help her pick out some new outfits. She wants to be accepted and fit in like anyone her age. It’s a good start.”

Zach’s chest warmed. Crystal selflessly wanted to help someone. How could he have ever thought she was shallow?

He leaned over and kissed her. “You are an amazing, giving person.”

She undid her seatbelt and kissed him back, before resting her head on his shoulder. “About last night…”

“Yeah?” He stroked her hair.

“It was incredible. Can we do it again?” She gazed up at him, her eyes shining and that shy smile on her face again.

His cock sprang to life, and he had to remind himself they were on the side of a road, not in his home. Still, he wouldn’t deny he wanted her again. “Yes, but not tonight. You’ve got to be exhausted.”

She sighed and nodded. “Yeah, I am.”

“I’ll take a raincheck for sure.” He traced a finger down her cheek, and his heart did a slow roll.

She squeezed his arm and nodded.

“It’s getting late. We better head back.” He kissed her again and started up the truck.

Much as he didn’t want to upset her, they really needed to talk about the contract. He glanced at her, but her eyes were shut and her breathing steady. That was fast. She must have been wiped out.

Damn.

Nothing she could do about it overnight anyway, and she needed her rest. He’d find a way to talk to her in the morning.
