Elijah appreciated the apology and Reid’s honesty, but he still didn’t trust the guy. Mason had said not to be fooled by Reid’s good looks and charm, and honestly, Reid reminded him of Kyle.

That wasn’t a good thing.

Elijah could sense the underlying danger in Reid’s eyes. There was something he couldn’t quite put his finger on, but it made the hair on his arms stand on end. He tried not to show his unease, though, because he didn’t want to offend Mason’s brother. After all, he was a shifter, and Elijah didn’t want to get on the wrong side of any shifter.

“I understand you’re curious,” Elijah said, trying to defuse the tension. “But I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to hang out without Mason here.”

Reid’s eyes narrowed slightly, a predatory glint in his gaze. “I see. You’re worried I might try something.”

Elijah stiffened. “I didn’t say that.”

“But you’re thinking it.” Reid’s voice was low and dangerously seductive, making Elijah even more uneasy.

“I think you need to leave.” Elijah was calling Mason as soon as he closed the door.

As if sensing Elijah’s discomfort, Reid raised his hands in surrender. “All right, all right. I get it. I’ll leave you be. But just know that I wasn’t trying to make you uncomfortable. I just want to get to know my brother’s boyfriend.” He gave Elijah a small smile before turning to leave.

Elijah let out a sigh of relief as he watched Reid walk back to his red Mustang. He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something off about Mason’s brother. Something dangerous.

As he closed the door, his phone rang. It was Mason calling. Elijah answered on the first ring, grateful for the distraction.

“Hey, baby.” Mason’s voice was a balm to Elijah’s frayed nerves. “I was just calling to hear your voice.”

“Your brother just showed up unannounced,” Elijah said, his voice still tense. “He said he wanted to meet me or something.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line before Mason spoke. “Reid shouldn’t have done that. I’ll talk to him.”

“I just don’t understand why he would come see me without you here,” Elijah said, still feeling uneasy. “He’s just as charming as you said he was, but I don’t trust him.”

Mason let out a sigh. “You don’t have to worry about Reid. He may be my brother, but he knows better than to mess with what’s mine.”

Elijah felt a little bit reassured by Mason’s protective words. “Does he know I’m your mate?”

“No,” Mason said. “I want to feel him out first, find out why he just blew into town. He’s always been jealous of me for some reason, and I felt it best to keep our mating from him. He might try to use that against me.”

There went Elijah’s feeling of reassurance. Reid was bad news.

“Just be careful, okay?” Elijah said, his voice softening. “I don’t like the way he looked at me. It was like he was sizing me up or something.”

“I’ll take care of it.” Mason’s tone was firm, reassuring. “I’ll make sure he knows his place.”

Elijah felt a sudden rush of desire at the sound of Mason’s confident voice. He missed him more than he cared to admit.

“Can you come over tonight?” Elijah asked, feeling a sudden urge to be close to Mason. “I need to see you.”

“Of course, baby,” Mason said, his voice husky with desire. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

Elijah hung up the phone and rushed to get ready. He needed Mason’s touch, his warmth, his reassuring presence. He couldn’t stop thinking of the amazing sex they’d had, and Elijah smiled to himself.

He’d jumped in feet first when it came to mating Mason, and he still didn’t regret it.

As soon as Mason arrived, Elijah practically threw himself into his arms. The scent of his mate was intoxicating, and Elijah couldn’t resist pressing himself against Mason’s muscular chest.

“I missed you,” Elijah said, his voice muffled against Mason’s chest.

Mason chuckled and lifted Elijah’s chin so he could look into his eyes. “I missed you too, but we’ve only been apart for five hours.”

That might be true, but Elijah was catching feelings for Mason. Was it too soon to admit that?
