Elijah choked as he turned and stared at Gage. “You’re not changing anything on me.”

“That’s exactly what I was saying.” Gage waved at his couch. “Go ahead and have a seat. I have to have a word with your boyfriend.”

Elijah looked between them, shrugged, and tossed himself onto the couch. Gage walked to his kitchen, Mason following. As soon as they cleared the threshold, Gage spun around. “Are you fucking nuts?” he whispered heatedly at Mason. “You could have given a guy some warning before simply showing up on my steps like some damn stray.”

“It was a last-minute decision,” Mason argued back in a low whisper. “I wasn’t going to leave my mate alone at my house, and he didn’t want his parents to see his face that way.”

“Why aren’t you going to be with him?”

“Because I’m hunting Kyle down,” Mason said with a snarl. “He’s going to die for what he did.”

“That’s brilliant,” Gage argued. “Kyle kicks Elijah ass. Elijah’s ‘boyfriend’ shows up at the scene. That night, Kyle is dead. Gee, I wonder who the cops will look at for suspects.” He wiggled his finger at Mason. “In case you haven’t figured it out, his fucking boyfriend.”

“The cops are shifters,” Mason pointed out. “They won’t arrest me.”

“But Kyle’s dad will throw a humungous fit when his son is discovered dead. He has powerful connections.”

“Who says his dad has to discover anything?” Mason asked.

“Are your brains made of fumes?” Gage asked. “Of course his dad will know his son is missing, and he’ll give up his fortune to find Kyle.”

“Then work a spell to make his dad forget he even has a son,” Mason said, as if it was that easy. “Or we’ll get a vampire to erase his and his wife’s memory.”

“Or don’t kill Kyle,” Gage argued. “You kicked his ass. He kicked Elijah’s. Everyone lives to see another day.”

“He hurt my mate,” Mason snarled as he paced Gage’s small kitchen. “I’m supposed to simply let that slide?”

“What a novel idea,” Gage replied. “Big, testosterone-filled man uses common sense. I’m surprised you’re not beating your chest while you’re saying this.”

“Just wait.” Mason pointed a finger at Gage. “Wait until you find your mate, and let’s see how you’ll feel when he acts all caveman.”

“Spells? Vampires?”

Gage whipped around and groaned when he saw Elijah standing there. How had he not heard the guy walk in, and why hadn’t Mason noticed him, either? “A video game we play online together.” Gage smiled, hoping he was convincing. “I’m Gage the Gnawer.” He pointed at Mason. “He’s Mason the Spellcaster.”

Elijah narrowed his eyes. “Spill it, Mason, or your truck is going to be one lonely place.”

“He’s a fairy,” Mason said so damn quickly that Gage’s head spun. He turned and looked at Mason, his jaw dropping.

“Quick on the trigger, Mason,” Gage snapped. “I hope your stamina is better, because, if not, Elijah is in for an unhappy life. You didn’t even hold out for five seconds.”

Gage was going to strangle the damn tiger shifter. There was a reason Gage didn’t want anyone to know what he was. If the people hunting him found out where he was, he would be dead.

Chapter Ten

Elijah wasn’t buying it. There was no way Mason was a gamer. And if he was, he’d have a better name than Mason the Spellcaster. Lame. “Not buying it,” Elijah said, crossing his arms over his chest.

Gage sighed and gave Mason an exasperated look. “I’m a fairy. Like, a real fairy. Not a pixie or anything like that.”

Elijah’s mouth dropped open, and he just stared at his friend. “A fairy? Seriously?” He looked around, expecting a fairy godmother to pop out of thin air.

“Yes.” Mason said, his voice a bit louder and more confident. “It’s true. Gage is a fairy. He can do all kinds of tricks. Spells, potions, that kind of stuff.”

“I’m not a circus sideshow,” Gage argued.

“Never said you were.” Mason spread his hands. “Just stating facts.”

Elijah shook his head in disbelief. It was like something out of a fantasy novel, but here it was, right in front of him. A real, honest-to-god fairy. His mouth twitched as he fought back a smile. It figured Gage would be a fairy and not some badass shifter. The guy was short and slim and always wore that damn hat.
