“I’m your mate. Think of me that way.” Denali nuzzled Zayde’s neck, and a shiver ran down Zayde’s spine at the sensation of Denali’s breath on his skin.

“It’s that important to you?” Oh god, how was Zayde supposed to concentrate on their conversation when Denali was this close?

“Yes, it’s the most important thing to me,” Denali said.

“Okay.” Zayde gasped as Denali nibbled at his neck. He didn’t even care that they were in the parking lot. “I’ll see you later… mate.”

Denali purred. “I can’t get enough of you saying that.”

“What was that sound?” Zayde pulled back, his brows hiked to his hairline. “Did you just purr?”

“My cat wants you.” Denali took a deep breath, as if composing himself. “I can’t help that sound, Zayde.”

“I don’t want you to stop making it.” Now Zayde wondered if Denali would purr if he petted the guy…while Denali was naked. He was dying to find out.

Denali pressed his lips to the shell of Zayde’s ear, sending even more shivers through him. “Play nice and I’ll purr on demand for you.”

Zayde was going to melt right there on the spot. His cock was already rock hard, and now he would need a moment before he went back inside the clinic. He didn’t want to scare the elderly women he’d seen in the waiting area with his raging boner.

Just then Denali’s shoulder radio squawked. The dispatcher said something in a code Zayde didn’t understand.

“I guess you have to get back to work,” Zayde said, disappointed, even though he himself needed to get back to work.

Denali sighed. “Duty calls.” He gave Zayde a thorough kiss that left them both breathless. “See you at seven.”

“Seven,” Zayde said in a daze. Then he blinked several times. “What about Chloe? You can’t take her on call with you.”

Denali twisted his lips to the side. It was the sexiest damn look. “That was code for ‘hurry up, you’re late with our lunch.’”

Zayde burst out laughing. “You have a code for that?”

“Yes. It’s my turn to get it. I guess my coworkers are losing their patience.” Denali gave him a quick kiss. “They didn’t know I was stopping by the clinic.”

“Do they know you’re a lion?” Zayde knew that Denali had to get going, but he was downright curious.

Denali leaned an arm on the roof of the car, trapping Zayde between his body and the cruiser. “Sweetheart, everyone at the station is a shifter.”

“Seriously?” Zayde had seen the cops around town, but… “They’re all lions?”

“No.” Denali shook his head. “Just me and Deputy Cannon Lowery. Sheriff Harper is a grizzly bear shifter, Deputy Savani is a polar bear, and Deputy Birch is a cheetah.”

Zayde’s head began to spin. “You didn’t tell me there were other kinds of shifters besides lions.”

“We’ll talk at dinner,” Denali said. “I really need to go. Sheriff Harper just got back from a camping trip with his mate, and he’s not happy he’s back at work and not out in the woods with Julian.”

“Wait. Are you talking about Julian the waiter at Deep Dish?” Not that Zayde assumed there was only one Julian in Midnight Falls. That was possible though.

“Yes, he’s Dominic’s mate.” Denali opened the driver’s door. “Julian is human, but his boss, Roman, is a snow leopard. Mason, the owner of Wild Tiger, is a Bengal tiger shifter.”

“Keep blowing my mind and I’ll be too shocked to cook,” Zayde warned, only half joking.

“My lips are sealed, then,” Denali said. “See you at seven.”

Zayde watched the guy pull away. No, he watched his mate pull away, missing his deputy already. He also had a feeling tonight’s dinner conversation was going to blow his mind even more than it already was.

Chapter Four

After Denali dropped lunch off at the station, he took Chloe home. He wanted her as comfortable as possible after what she’d just been through.
