“I’m Gage,” the guy said.

“I called him,” Sheriff Harper said when he came back into the room. “Gage is a fairy.”

“You weren’t supposed to know that,” Gage said to the sheriff. “Who spilled the beans?”

“That battle you had with your father?” the sheriff said. “Things don’t stay a secret around here. Anyway, can you take a look at Deputy Davis’s wound and tell me if you can heal it?”

Hope blossomed inside Zayde. “I’m going out on a limb and guessing that you’re magical.”

Gage smiled at him. “Then you picked the right limb. Let me take a look.”

Holding his breath, Zayde watched as Gage examined Denali. “What did this?”

“From what I understand, a whip made of fire,” Zayde said. “Some demon named Kalin.”

Gage straightened so fast he should have fallen over. “Did you just say Kalin?”

“Yes.” The hope inside Zayde, already diminishing, died. “Why?”

“Because that rat-bastard demon terrorized our people eons ago. It wasn’t until the Keeper trapped and imprisoned him that we could finally live in peace. First, how did Kalin escape, and second, why is he after the deputy?”

“My mate,” Zayde corrected him. “I have no idea on either account.”

“He’s Ernan’s brother,” Denali groaned. “Kalin wants revenge for Hondo killing his brother.”

“Oh good, you’re still alive. I had my doubts looking at you,” Gage said as he stared down at Denali. “If Hondo killed Ernan, why is Kalin after you?”

Hadn’t Denali just explained that to the fairy?

“He wants all involved to die,” Denali said, his eyes still closed. “Starting with me.”

Sheriff Harper cursed. “That means we’re all in danger. I better warn the other men.”

“Tell them not to engage,” Gage said. “He’s more powerful than any of you can handle. Heed my warning, Sheriff Harper. If Kalin is coming after you, you might want to make sure your affairs are in order.”

“So you can’t help Denali?” Zayde asked.

“I’m sorry, but no. Not if this was Kalin’s doing.” Gage looked apologetically at Zayde. “I wish I could help. My people are magical, but a lot of them were killed when Kalin attacked them a millennia ago. None of us could defeat him, and we couldn’t reverse what he’d done to so many.” He looked over his shoulder and saw Sheriff Harper on the phone, and then he turned his attention back to Zayde. “I only pray he doesn’t try to destroy your people, too.”

Zayde didn’t correct Gage and tell the guy he was human.

“If you want to protect Deputy Davis, even for a little while, because Kalin will find you, I suggest you keep moving.”

“Denali,” Zayde said. “His name is Denali.”

To Zayde’s surprise, Gage hugged him. “I hope Denali makes it out of this alive.”

Then Gage vanished. Poof. Gone. It was the freakiest thing Zayde had seen, and that was saying something. Now Zayde knew how the people on Star Trek felt when they saw someone beamed up. One second, he was standing there, and the next, he wasn’t.

“Everyone is on alert,” Sheriff Harper said when he hung up his phone. “The diner owner is going to keep an eye on my mate because I’m staying here until Denali is back on his feet and able to fight.”

“But Gage just said you guys don’t stand a chance,” Zayde reminded him, feeling as if his heart were shattering.

“Don’t count us out yet,” the sheriff said. “If Panahasi is involved, we might make it out of this alive.”

“What exactly is Panahasi?” Zayde asked as he took a seat on his coffee table, allowing the sheriff to have his chair. The sheriff sat, gazing at Denali.

“Honestly, I don’t know. He’s the demon leader, powerful, and rumor has it that he’s Life, but no one knows for sure.”
