“Sheriff Harper gives me those details in case I have to treat someone. Not knowing what they are is detrimental to their care, Deputy Davis.”

“Call me Denali.”

“Call me Zackary,” the doctor said. “Thank you for handling Mr. Alvis. What a nasty piece of work. I have to commend Zayde for sticking up for Dixon. I really didn’t want Mr. Alvis to take him home.”

Denali wanted to kick Zayde’s butt for putting himself in harm’s way, but he understood why his mate had done it. Denali didn’t want to think about the abuse that poor wiener dog had suffered at Mr. Alvis’s hands.

Now he wondered how well Chloe and Dixon would get along, because Denali planned on asking Zayde to move in with him. That was a big step for Denali. He’d always lived alone, and not only would it be an adjustment for Chloe but for him too.

“I need to ask you something,” he said.

“Go ahead,” Zackary said.

“Are you aware of what mates are?” Denali hoped so, because he wanted Zayde to have his two weeks off. It was killing Denali not to be with him while they were in their honeymoon period. All he could think about at work was his mate and how he wanted to have sex with him in every position possible.

Zackary smiled. “I’m fully aware. Sheriff Harper has taught me a lot about shifters. Like I said, these are things I need to know.”

Okay, so far, so good. “Do you know about the honeymoon period?”

Now the vet frowned. “Are you saying that Zayde is your mate?” He looked deep in thought. “It should have been obvious. He becomes flustered when you’re around, and when you’re not here, Zayde seems very distracted.”

Denali chuckled. He liked hearing that his mate missed him as much as he missed Zayde. “The honeymoon period is when a preternatural finds his or her–”

Zackary held up his hand. “I’m fully aware. Like I said, Sheriff Harper was very thorough when explaining everything to me a few years ago.” He sighed. “That’ll leave me short-staffed, but we’ll make do while you and Zayde enjoy your two weeks.”

Denali was stoked now. Sheriff Harper had said to tell him when Denali would be taking time off, and now he could tell his boss that he would be gone for two weeks.

“Can I take him now?” Denali asked.

The vet chuckled. “I haven’t seen anyone this impatient to be with someone else in a very long time. Yes, Zayde may leave now, but I want him back in two weeks.”

“You got it.” Denali hurried to the door and made his way to the front of the clinic. Zayde was talking with Marissa by her desk.

“A word?” Denali asked his mate as he smiled at Marissa.

“Take exam room A,” Marissa said with a wink.

Zayde frowned. “There’s a camera in there. Not on your life, Miss Nosy.”

Dixon walked over to Denali and sniffed at his leg, and then the dog lifted his little leg and began to pee on him.

“Dixon!” Zayde grabbed the dog and pulled him into his arms. “We don’t pee on people. You can’t mark Denali as yours.”

Marissa cracked up. “Looks like you have competition, Zayde.”

The dog probably smelled Denali’s lion and was trying to show dominance. It was the cutest thing to Denali. He plucked Dixon from Zayde’s arms. “We’ll talk outside.”

“You guys are no fun,” Marissa said with a pout.

“I’ll tell Casey you were spying on us,” Zayde warned.

Denali had no idea who Casey was, but he put Casey from his mind as he grabbed Zayde’s hand and pulled him toward the exit. Once outside, Denali put Dixon down but made sure to keep hold of the leash.

“Do you want to make out in the parking lot again?” Zayde blushed. “I’m all for it, if my boss doesn’t catch us.”

Zayde was good for Denali’s ego. “Oh, we’ll be making out. You’re boss just gave you two weeks off for our honeymoon period.”

“You’re kidding.” Zayde furrowed his brows. “But how?”
