Shifting away from my natural form took more effort every time I did it. Each time, I feared it would be my last.

No. This was no time to feel fucking sorry for myself.

I pushed myself up off the pavement, my muscles screaming with the movement. “Hannah. Need to know she’s safe.”

I could barely get the words out before they were met with gasps. The reporters resumed hollering questions at me.

The production assistant put her hand on my arm. “Did something happen to her?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

Her face paled, and the roar from the crowd intensified.

“Are you sure about this, Lars?” one of the reporters asked.

I nodded.

“She went out on a date with Armand, the wolf, tonight. What are you willing to do to get her back?” another reporter shouted.

“Everything.”

Hannah

Bibi clapped her hand over her mouth and gasped.

“What’s wrong?” I put down my mudslide and joined her and Hugo at the door.

“The Sunset Springs Sasquatch that appeared on stage atThe Mating Gamedays ago just resurfaced outside of the show’s headquarters. It appeared as though he came from inside the building. Lars, as some close to the show have referred to the sasquatch, transformed into a human before our very eyes. And we caught it all on camera.”

The news report flashed to the replay. My heart skipped a beat when Lars came onto the screen. He was still in his natural form, but outside of Mating Game HQ, with all the reporters and fans shouting at him, he was totally out of his element. His eyes were wide, and he was frozen in place, like he was their prey and he’d been caught.

The all-too-real possibility sent a shiver down my spine.

“It was like his fur melted away,”a voiceover said.“I couldn’t believe my own eyes. His body underwent a complete metamorphosis. And then he was human.”

“Kinda hot, too,”someone else added with a giggle.“And totally naked.”

I took the tablet from Bibi, unable to breathe as the image of human Lars pushed himself up from the pavement. His long, brown hair cascaded down his shoulders and onto his back. He looked up at the cameras. There was something still wild in those brown eyes. Not quite human. He had a full beard, and his lips were parted. He stayed there like that for a moment, just as stunned as everyone else as the camera panned over his body. Long, lean, muscular limbs came into view. No surprise he had a hairy chest and sculpted abs.

Of course, the broadcast had added a blur to the parts of him that weren’t safe for television. But the rest of him looked like he either belonged behind a drum set in a heavy metal band or the back of a motorcycle. Both of which were totally my type, but I had this strange, unexpected sense of mourning. Like we might never be able to recapture the magic of our first night together.

“Hannah.” My body went numb as my name fell from his lips. His voice was the same. Deep and rumbly. All beast. “Need to know she’s safe.”

One of the production assistants put her hand on his arm and asked him a question that I couldn’t hear. He nodded.

“She went on a date with Armand, the wolf, tonight.” Damn that reporter for reminding Lars of that in his first moments of humanity. “What are you willing to do to get her back?”

“Everything.” Even through the screen, his growl resonated deep inside my body, making things only he was able to touch come alive.

The production assistants managed to coax him away from the reporters and back inside the building.

“We need to get to HQ. Now.” I handed the tablet back to Hugo. “He shouldn’t be alone. I know, he’s been human a million times before, but never like this. He needs us.”

Bibi and Hugo looked at each other.

“What? Is there something you’re not telling me?”
