“I’m not going to babysit you tonight,” he says once he’s in earshot.

“And I don’t expect you to.” I open my eyes wide to him.

“Does your dad know you’re here?”

I laugh out loud. “I should probably ask the same question of you since you’re his golden boy,” I taunt.

Aaron had one hell of a season, and my dad even pulled him up to a few varsity games. I’ve heard them talking a few times, and it sounds like he’ll be the starting quarterback next year on the varsity team as a sophomore.

He wraps his arm around me, acting like he might playfully put me in a choke hold, then stops before actually doing so. The way he holds me feels different, foreign almost, but I blow it off, thinking it’s the alcohol I’ve had.

“Fine,” he says, staring down at me, still holding me close to him. “How about we keep an eye on each other and make sure he doesn’t find out about any of this?”

“Deal.” I hold my cup up, and he shakes his head in disbelief.

“I have a feeling this is going to be a night we won’t forget.”

As the time goes by, I pour a few more drinks and am feeling pretty good. The house is full, and I have to slide by people at times to get to the bathroom. Once inside, I take a minute to steady myself, realizing the alcohol is hitting me stronger all of a sudden.

I take my time going to the bathroom and breathe my way through the spins that are starting. When I exit the room, I run straight into Beau, who grabs me to steady my body.

“Hey, you okay there?” He leans down to meet my eyes with his.

I stand up straight. “Oh. Hi. Yeah, I’m fine. When did you get here?”

“Just a few minutes ago. You look like you’ve been here for a bit. Should we get you some water?”

I slap my hand on his chest, loving how hard it feels under my palm. I let that thought sink in a little too long before I remember he asked me a question. When I stare up at him, I can tell he’s trying to hold back his laugh.

I shake my head. “You know, water is probably a good idea.”

“Okay then, let’s go get you some water.”

He leads me toward the kitchen, where he grabs a glass from a cupboard and pours me some water from the fridge dispenser, then hands it to me. “Drink this.”

I take a sip and then bring it down from my lips to hold it in front of me.

He places his hand on it and moves it back up to my mouth. “Nope. Keep going. Drink the entire thing.”

I do as I was told, keeping my eyes on him until it’s empty, then hand it back to him. “Happy now?”

He grins. “Very.” He pauses and looks me up and down. “I didn’t think you’d be here tonight.”

I tilt my head to the side. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

He steps ever so closer to me. “I thought your dad had you on a pretty tight lockdown.”

I look up into his dark green eyes, loving the way his hair falls down, covering one of them a little. “He’s not that controlling over me. I do have a life, you know.”

I feel his body get closer to mine.

“Does that life include any boyfriends?”

My insides burst with desire that I try so hard to bring back in, praying for my lips to speak, but nothing comes out.

“Pony” by Ginuwine is playing in the living room, and he tilts his head toward it. “Want to dance?”

I rub my lips together and nod. “Sure.”
