He lets out a chuckle that fills me with hope that he’ll say yes, so before he just jumps to automatically say no and not giving him more time to think, I continue, “You know I’ll be with Heather and Megan. You’re always okay if I hang out with them. Why is at night any different?”

He shakes his head and narrows his eyes on me. “You know exactly why it’s different.”

I roll my eyes, then try to act like I didn’t because I still want him to say yes.

“Please, Daddy. I didn’t get to do anything all summer. Let me finally go out and act like I’m in high school for a change.”

He glances to the side in thought, then looks back to me. “Fine. You can go. But you have to be home by midnight. And not a second later.” He pauses to make sure I’m hearing him correctly. “And this is your one chance to prove I can trust you.”

I jump with joy. “Thank you, Daddy. Don’t worry.”

I give him a hug, and he hugs me back.

“You know I always worry about you.”

“I know, Daddy. I love you.” I run off to meet Heather, excited I’ll finally get to hang out like a normal teenager tonight.

We head back to her place to change, and I borrow a dress that I’ve loved since the day she bought it. She said I could borrow it as her way to celebrate my release for the jail I’d been calling home, and I couldn’t agree with her more.

Justin comes to pick us up, and to my surprise, I open the door to see Beau already sitting in the backseat, like he’s waiting for me.

“Oh. Hi. I didn’t know you’d be here,” I say, surprised and slightly flustered to be in his presence after all this time.

“Yeah, Justin said you guys were hanging out tonight, so he offered for me to tag along,” Beau replies. “Hope you don’t mind.”

I shake my head as I slide in next to him. “Nope.”

Once I’m sitting and my seat belt is buckled, I look forward, only to see Heather and Justin sucking face like they haven’t seen each other in months instead of just hours. I turn to Beau, feeling awkward as hell, and he just laughs, then hits the seat in front of him, making Justin twitch.

“Hey, fucker. We’re back here, remember? Not really in the mood for a show tonight.”

He pulls away from Heather and shouts over his shoulder to Beau, “Don’t be jealous.”

Beau glances my way, and I feel my entire face flush just by the way his eyes meet mine with a hunger I’ve never seen on anyone before.

“So, what’s the plan tonight?” Heather chimes in as she reaches to buckle her seat belt.

“Gabe’s parents are gone again. Party at his place,” Justin answers as he puts the truck in gear.

“Then, it’s a damn good thing Megan couldn’t come out tonight,” Heather says with a laugh.

Megan and Gabe broke up over the summer. Heather said I was lucky to miss the night when Megan caught him kissing Sarah, a girl we’ve known for years. Sarah knew Megan and Gabe were dating, so the fact that she still made out with him in the back of someone’s truck was a big shock to everyone.

Justin turns up the radio as we drive down the road to Gabe’s place. I’m thankful for the loud music around us, as it makes me feel like I don’t have to have small talk with Beau next to me. For right now, I’m totally fine, just sitting next to him and enjoying the breeze in my hair.

When he moves his hand to intertwine his fingers with mine though, all bets are off, and my nerves jump full force with only memories of how many nights we’ve left with seemingly unfinished business to be had.

I turn my head to him, and when he gives me a grin, I swear I melt into the seat completely.

CHAPTERTWELVE

Sophomore Year

Once we’re at Gabe’s house, we enter, and I’m shocked at the mood that’s seemingly everywhere I look. The last time I was here, the kitchen was full of liquor, and the house was turned into a dance club. Now though, all I see are couples, paired off and not being discreet about wanting to be together.

Gabe approaches us with Sarah on his arm, and it takes all my power to not slap the shit out of her.

Instead, I take a deep breath, pretending she’s not there as I say hello to Gabe. “Thanks for having us over.”
