The kiss catches him as off guard as me, but when he gives me a slight grin, I can tell he understands, and I try to change the subject.

“So, what are the plans for tonight?” I ask as I turn to head out of the stadium and he walks with me.

We all decide to hang out by the lake since it’s such a nice night. Heather, Megan, and I all get a ride from Justin, who is now driving his dad’s truck as his parents try to find him a new one since his was totaled.

Since it’s so dark, everyone leaves their truck lights on so we can make our way down to where some picnic benches are set up.

As we approach, I see Beau sitting on the table with his feet on the bench, and I walk straight toward him. The way his eyes light up when he sees me makes my insides turn to goo.

“Hey, you,” he says as he reaches out to grab my hand and pull me toward him.

“Hi.” I lean in and give him a side hug. “How long have you guys been here?”

“Just arrived, so perfect timing.” He pats the seat next to him. “Sit with me.”

I do, and when I don’t sit close enough, he scoots next to me, placing his hand on my knee. I grin at him as Megan walks up in front of us.

“Well then, this looks good,” she says about us.

“Yeah, I think so too,” Beau responds, making me blush.

We all hang out and talk for a few minutes and are having a good time until Aaron shows up. He got his license last week, and it’s still weird, seeing him drive up in his mom’s car and hop out of the driver’s side.

“What’s up, dog?” Beau says as he goes to give him a high five.

“Dog?” Aaron mimics. “Did you forget you don’t live in California anymore?”

Beau blows him off. “Whatever.”

“Yeah, Aaron.” Megan stands up. “What’s up your ass?”

“This guy.” He points at Beau, who stands up instantly.

“Excuse me? What the fuck did I do besides win your game tonight?”

“Don’t act all badass. You caught the ball, only because I threw it—don’t forget that,” Aaron bites back, getting slightly closer to Beau.

I place my hand on Beau’s shoulder, trying to calm the situation. “Come on, Aaron. Don’t come over here, starting shit. What’s your problem?”

“Do you have no respect for the game your dad runs?” he shouts at me.

Beau gets in his face. “Don’t you dare talk to her like that.”

“I can’t believe you’d give away your penny like it meant nothing to you.” Aaron stands up taller to Beau even though Beau’s got an inch or two on him.

Just when I think things are getting a little too heated, Beau does something that surprises all of us, especially Aaron.

He laughs as he sits back down.

“Why the fuck are you laughing?” Aaron spits out.

Beau puts his hand back on my knee and brings it toward him, then shrugs. “Because I get the feeling you’re not pissed off about me giving away my penny. You’re pissed off aboutwhoI gave my penny to.”

Beau nudges me playfully, but when I look at Aaron, all I see is red as he inhales a deep breath.

“She has nothing to do with it,” Aaron grits out.
