I wave. “Hi.”

The guy puts his hand out to me to shake. “I’m Blake, and this is Wyatt.”

I shake Blake’s hand and then turn to Wyatt and do the same. His handshake is firm, and the way he looks me right in the eye sends a chill of excitement down my spine.

Maybe I can be human again …

We order, using the intercom button, then all hop in the back of his truck, where he has chairs already set up for us.

“What school do you guys go to?” I ask once we get all settled.

“Fisher. How about you?” Wyatt asks.

Fisher is our rival school, and when we play them, it’s always the biggest game of the football season.

“Oh man, we should have asked before we agreed to meet you.” I stand like I’m going to leave. “We go to Mac High, so, yeah, we can’t be seen with the likes of your kind.”

I act like I’m going to jump down when Heather grabs me, laughing. “Don’t listen to her. You’re looking at Coach Z’s daughter. So, obviously, that’s a big deal for her dad, but not for us.”

They nod with a smile.

“Ah, a little rivalry. I dig it.” Wyatt leans in closer. “Having to sneak around is more fun anyway.”

He winks at me, and I swear I feel my face flush. I don’t think I’ve ever had someone flirt with me so openly.

I like it.

We spend the night talking and laughing and just genuinely having a great time. For the first time this entire summer, I feel like a normal teenage girl again. But it’s not just the feeling of being normal; it’s also the hope it’s giving me that I can get over what happened and move on with my life—without Beau or Aaron.

Maybe that’s how it was supposed to be all along.

Maybe that’s why things never really started with Beau and ended so badly with Aaron.

It was the universe telling me that neither of them is who I’m supposed to be with.

Maybe it’s this Wyatt guy, and I’m meeting him exactly when I’m meant to.

The thought makes me smile as I sit back and relax even more. Heather must notice because she grabs my hand, giving me a smile.

After we eat our food, I stand up, needing to run to the restroom.

“Want me to come with you?” Heather asks.

“Nah, you can stay here. It’s a tiny restroom anyway. I’ll be right back,” I respond.

I go to climb over the tailgate, and Wyatt hops up. “Here, let me help you.”

He jumps over the ledge to the ground, then holds his hands up to me. I grab on to him, and he lowers me down, holding me closer to his body than necessary, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like that he was doing so.

“Thank you,” I say barely above a whisper, mere inches from his face.

“Welcome.” He releases me, and I walk to the restroom, wondering if it is possible to move on to someone else.

After I use the restroom, I open the door and run straight into the chest of a guy I know a little too well.

Slowly, I move my sight up his frame until I meet his eyes.

“Oh. Sorry,” I say, trying to move past him, but he stops me.
