I glance at the clock, seeing it’s nine in the morning on a Saturday, then look at him in question. He shrugs and throws the phone on my bed.

I sit up and grab it, bringing it to my ear. “Megan?”

“What. Did. You. Do?” she screams into the phone so loud that I have to pull it away from my ear.

My mind is in shambles as I think about that night a week ago at the burger joint. This can’t possibly be what she’s talking about. Besides, nothing happened—thanks to me!

“Megan, I don’t know what you’re talking about, but why are you calling me so early just to yell at me?”

“Don’t lie to me. Someone said they saw you in the back of the burger place with Beau last weekend.”

Fuck. Me.

“I swear, Megan, I did nothing wrong. I wouldn’t do that to you. I know you’re dating him. Whoever told you they saw us obviously didn’t tell you how I walked away seconds after he stopped me in the hallway,” I plead, not wanting my friend to hate me even more than she already did.

“You can’t just leave him alone, can you? You couldn’t stand that I had him and you didn’t.” Her voice cracks, and I hate hearing her so upset.

“Megan, look. I don’t know why you’re calling me, but I talked to him for five seconds, then left and went back to mydate.”

“He broke up with me!” she shouts into the phone. “He said he still has feelings for you and that it wasn’t fair, being with me when he felt that way.”

My heart sinks lower than I’ve ever felt it before.

No. No. No. No. No. No. No!

I cover my face with the palm of my hand.

“Not so talkative now, are you?” she taunts.

“Megan, you have to know I had nothing to do with this. That was the first time I’d talked to him in months. I’m sorry he broke it off with you. I truly am. But I had nothing to do with it.”

“You bitch!” she screams and hangs up the phone.

I drop my head back with a sigh as I throw the phone next to me.

I finally moved on with my life, and now, this happens.

After I left Beau at the burger place, it took me a while, but I was able to get him out of my head and go back to enjoying my night. Wyatt and I have spoken a few times since then and even have plans to hang out tonight.

Now, this.

I close my eyes and let out a deep breath. When the phone rings, I’m almost afraid to look to see who it is, and I breathe a sigh of relief when I see it’s Heather.

“Well, top of the morning to you,” I answer sarcastically.

“Megan told me she called you,” she replies.

“And did you stand up for me?”

She sighs. “I did. Then, she hung up on me, so I called you. Please tell me exactly what happened because I know that was his car leaving the parking lot that night, and you looked mighty flustered for just going to the restroom.”

I sit up like she can see me, ready to defend myself. “I swear I did nothing.”

“But?”

I bite the inside of my bottom lip. “But he did. I stopped it though.”

“Sadie!” she yells. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
