We hop in the car and head back home, where I see that the estate sale is over and my childhood home is all closed up once again.

“Hey, how was the lake?” Debbie asks as we enter the house.

I smile at Aaron. “It was really good. Just nice to sit and do nothing for a little while.”

“I’m glad,” she says as she sits down on the couch. “Oh, I forgot my water in the kitchen. Would you mind getting it for me?”

“Sure.” I head to the kitchen, only to see lights strung up everywhere in the backyard of my childhood home next door.

I walk back to the living room in question, only to see Beau standing there with a single rose and dressed in a tuxedo, looking handsomer than I’ve ever imagined.

I bring my hands up to my mouth, covering it as I yelp in surprise. “Oh my God!”

His face lights up at my glee. “Sadie, will you go to a backyard prom with me?”

He holds out the rose, and a tear slips from my eye. I glance down at my outfit that I wore to the lake today—cutoff shorts and a tank top with my swimsuit underneath—and look back to him.

“I don’t—”

“Oh, yes, you do,” Debbie says as she walks in from the hallway, holding a beautiful blue sequined dress. “He helped me pick this out for you.”

I stand there in absolute shock, not having a clue what to say or do.

Beau asks, “Well?”

I laugh and run toward him, wrapping my arms around his neck in a big hug. “Yes, I’ll go to prom with you.” I give him a quick kiss. “Let me get ready.”

I rush back to my bedroom, and Debbie is quick to follow with the dress. I take a quick shower, and she helps me get my hair put up in an updo that she already had planned out. I apply my makeup and slip on the dress, which fits me like a glove.

“You guys did amazing with this dress choice,” I say with a huge smile on my face.

“We thought you’d like it.” She wraps me in a hug. “We just didn’t want you to miss out on something so special.”

“Thank you. This is way better.” My voice cracks, and she pulls back.

“Nope. No crying. You’ll ruin your makeup.” She puts her finger under my eye before the eyeliner runs.

I can’t help but laugh. “Okay, no crying.”

“Let’s go show Beau and Aaron how pretty you are.”

Hearing Aaron’s name makes me think. “Wait.” I stop her from leaving the room by reaching for her arm. “Was Aaron in on this? Is that why we went to the lake today?”

She grins as she places her hand over mine. “Of course he was, sweetie. He just wants to see you happy.”

My heart feels so full because I have such an amazing support system with Beau, Aaron, and his mom.

I give her another hug. “Thank you. For everything.”

“You’ve always been the daughter I never had. Love you so much.”

“I love you too, Debbie.”

We walk out of the room as she says, “Are you guys ready?”

“Hell yeah,” Beau says, making me laugh.

I enter the living room, and the way both Beau and Aaron look at me completely lights me up inside. I’ve never felt so beautiful and so loved in my entire life.
