“That’s too bad because I want everything to do with that specimen of a human being,” Susie says with a laugh.

I can’t help but glance his way again and instantly regret it.

The referee calls for the team captains to meet in the middle of the field, and of course, Dalton is one of the three guys who heads toward the center of the field to greet the other team and do the coin flip.

“You can’t tell me you’re not checking out his ass right now,” Susie leans in to whisper to me.

I give her an exasperated expression, making her laugh.

“Deny it all you want, but every other girl in this stadium is doing just that.”

I sigh, knowing she’s right with that statement, and, damn it, she’s right about me too. But at least I know I’m not the only one.

“So, what’s the plan for after the game?” Trish, who’s sitting in front of us, turns around to ask.

I know she and Dalton have hooked up a few times, and her smug expression proves she heard us talking about him.

Ashley nudges me with her leg, signaling she saw how obvious Trish was being, but she still answers, “Everyone’s going to Ben’s.”

She doesn’t ask Trish if she’s coming, too, but knows whether we want her there or not, she’ll be there. Where else would she go? It’s Leighton River; there aren’t many other choices of what to do on a Friday night, which is why I mainly stay home.

Ashley grabs my hand, and before I can say anything, she stops me. “You’re coming.”

I laugh out loud. “Um, no, I’m not.”

“Yes, you have to,” she whines.

Thankfully, kickoff catches all of our attention, and everyone hollers for the start of the game.

Once everyone is sitting down, Ashley nudges me again. “You’re going. I need you there so I can talk to Marcus.”

The two of them have been talking for a few weeks now, and we think he’s finally going to make his move. She’s been giddy this entire time, and I’m happy to see that she’s happy, but …

“Then, what happens when you go off with Marcus, leaving me all alone? Because we both know Susie will already be off roaming around.”

“You’ll be just fine. Most of the school will be there too.”

She’s right. I’ve heard so much about these parties and the shit that goes down even though I’ve never been to one.

She squeezes my knee. “Come on,” she begs. “Please come with me?”

When I see her puckered-out lips and puppy-dog eyes, I can’t help but laugh.

I sigh. “Fine, but you owe me.”

She does a little happy dance in her seat. “Yay.” She looks back out onto the field, probably searching for Marcus. “I really think tonight’s the night. He must have asked me three times this week if I was going to Ben’s.”

“It will be.” I grin her way, honestly hoping they’ll finally cross that line together.

CHAPTER TEN

Dalton

I’m fucking hyped!

We won in probably the best game we’ve ever played tonight. Our defense was on point, and our offense, well, let’s just say I scored three touchdowns before halftime. It was a great way to start the season.

We all race into the locker room, and I can’t help but jump up onto Marcus’s shoulders when we enter through the doors.
