“It actually went better than I’d thought,” I respond. “I made a bet with Natalie about fixing her fence, and I won, so I got to make up shit about her for the paper I had to write. I wrote some pretty crazy nonsense, and when Mrs. Anderson questioned her, she owned up to every bit of it.”

“Sounds like an easy A. At least that’s done,” Ben says as he wraps his hand in between Maya’s thighs.

Maya doesn’t even notice he’s rubbing her leg when she asks, “What kind of bet involves fixing a fence?”

“She thought I couldn’t do it. But guess what? I did,” I brag boastfully.

“Serves her right for doubting you couldn’t do it,” Ben states.

“You fixed a fence?” Maya asks, shocked.

“Don’t sound so shocked,” I defend.

“No, that’s pretty cool. I’m just impressed, is all. I can’t believe she held up her side of the bet with Mrs. Anderson.”

“Yeah, I was a little surprised too,” I state.

“Hey. A bet’s a bet. Maybe she is more human than we thought,” Ben says as he grips Maya’s hips and lifts her off his lap. “I’ve got to head out. See you guys later.”

Ben leaves as Maya takes her spot back.

“So, it wasn’t too bad, having to work with Natalie, was it?”

I raise my shoulders, then drop them down. “Upuntil fixing the fence, it absolutely sucked, but winning that bet felt pretty good.”

She smiles sweetly. “I bet it did.” She jumps to her feet. “Well, Spanish awaits.Adios!”

“Adios,” I say as I stand as well and head to my second period class.

Natalie is already sitting at her desk, so after I take my seat, I lean forward.

“That was pretty cool that you owned up to your part of the bet. Can’t say I’m not a little surprised.”

She doesn’t bother turning around to face me, just says over her shoulder, “I lost the bet. What else was I to do?”

I don’t say anything in response and instead lean back in my seat with a slight grin on my face. Winning always feels good, but this win is especially yummy.

Monday morning, I’m sitting in English class, trying my hardest to stay awake after the intense workout I had this morning and not getting to eat afterward since I was running late to class.

I’m staring at the clock, counting down the minutes to get to my locker, where I have some food, when Mrs. Anderson announces our second partner project.

“Now that you’ve gotten to know all of the special and unique things your partner can do, it’s your turn to try one of them for yourself.”

“What?” I say out loud rather than to myself as I sit up, thinking I didn’t hear her right.

“Your next project is to try something they like to do that you’ve never done, and then write a paper about your experience and if you liked it as much as they did.”

I drop my head back in frustration, and when I sit back up, I see Natalie sitting with her head down on her arms that are folded on her desk.

Nice to see she’s as happy about this as I am.

“Since I’ve read all of your papers, I know that most of these things cannot be done in school, so I’m giving you three weeks to work on this project. Within that time, you should be able to get together and then write your paper.”

The bell rings, and Natalie grabs her stuff in a huff, leaving the classroom before anyone else.

I exit the room and head to the couches, where Maya is already hanging out.

“What happened with Natalie? She stormed out of that classroom and almost knocked me over.”
