“Okay, sweetie.” She glances up at me and pauses. “Everything okay? You look a little flush.”

I internally roll my eyes at the way my own body continues to betray me.

“Yeah. I just got a little frustrated with my schoolwork. I’ll be fine when I get back.”

She smiles, and I head out of the house and toward the barn, feeling good that I technically didn’t lie to her. This all started because of my schoolwork, and I intend to end it now.

I ride out to the river and am startled when I see Dalton on my side of the property, working on the fence again.

“What are you doing?” I ask as I hop off of Brandy.

“You left me here, waiting, so I thought I would straighten the rest of the boards as much as I could without tools.”

He walks toward me, and I take a guarded step back.

“Just stay there.” I hold up my palm to face him.

He doesn’t listen. “Why?”

“You know why.”

“No, I don’t. Tell me.”

I take a few more steps back. “You know this can’t happen, so just stop it now.”

“Stop what?” He’s wearing the smuggest expression as he steps within a few feet of me.

“Dalton.”

“Natalie.”

The way he says my name sends chills throughout my entire body.

Why does my name sound so different when it comes from his lips?

Lips I’ve despised for years.

Lips I thought were disgusting when other girls would say how cute he was.

Lips that I can’t stop thinking about now.

“This will never work,” I whisper, not able to raise my voice any louder.

He’s so close that I place my hand on his chestand feel the way his heart is pounding out of control, matching my own.

He’s just as nervous as I am. The cocky, arrogant Dalton Wick is having the same reaction to me as I am to him.

How is this possible?

This isn’t us.

We shouldn’t be standing here like this.

“What will never work?”

He’s going to make me say it. He’s going to make me admit that I do have feelings for him. That I do want him to kiss me right now.

I blink and look up, meeting his eyes and his molten stare. “Us.”
